Disposing of Hazardous Materials and other odds and ends continue to find evermore creative solutions for disposal.
Metal items are fairly easy as mid to larger cities have organizations that exchange 'money' for metal provided. They separate them by type for recycling. Smaller towns will have metal recycling /collection during the year, they get the money to cover the cost of the program, you get more space at home...
Newspaper and paper products have become a problem as the cost to recycle is greater than new. There are a growing number of Trash to Energy facilities, which either create electrical energy or stream for a City. But, you need one fairly close as you will need to deliver it to the facility and may need to pay a fee.
FYI: Remember that when used as a catch-all for your Parrot, you have in fact, recycled that newspaper and its time for it to be trashed.
Medications: An ever increasing number of Pharmacies have a drop of box for unused medications. Do Not dumb them into your toilet as many do not breakdown and become part of the fresh water supply.
The Real Dangerous Stuff. Across North America, near every Fire / Police Department or area Trash Collection District will have a couple of yearly collection of those really dangerous items, one has around the home, garage, shed or outbuilding.
Call and ask your local government and they will direct you!
