I want to build my own Java tree, I live in the southern US in Arkansas. What trees would be safe to use to build one? I know to use stainless for any hardware on it but want to be sure I use safe wood as well. Thanks

there are tons of lists of bird safe wood online, you can also goto your pet stores and buy cuts of java and put them all toghether to make a tree, me andmy father have been buying a large amoiunt of big branches to make a huge stand for the big macs:). I personally like maple, but there is much more you can use:).

I just spent the afternoon foraging the woods for dogwood trees. Easy to spot around here right now since they are flowering. From what I have read, dogwood is suppose to be a pretty solid wood when dried. Grapevine is great too, ESP. With all of its twists and turns, unfortunately I need to wait until the fruit is on the wild vines because we have a vine that mimics grapevine but toxic. I won't use vines from the local vineyards due to pesticides. There are other fruit trees that are good choices too.
My nine year old son wants to make his sister some toys/perches/stands for her birthday, since she'll be getting a Hahns macaw. I have been gathering up supplies to help him:)
