I bought two stainless steel bowls and holders from an Australian company on EBay about a week ago for my parrots new cage and both have started to rust. I was worried about my baby boy ingesting some. It also occurred to me that this could happen to others and that we should all be wary. I thought I was doing the right thing by saving money to buy a cheaper set of bowls but obviously I was wrong. Now this is not to say that every seller out there cannot be trusted, all i am asking is for others to be wary for the sake of their parrots. Some products are not as genuine as others.

Good information from David above.
Bleach and salts can cause SS to weaken its protective "oxide" layer and rust.

There is also the possibility that contaminants (plain steel) from the mold used to make the bows, embedded in the SS and that is what you see rusting. That will usually clean up after some time.

And the last possibility is that it is simply a very cheap stainless. If it is magnetic, there is a good possibility that it is 303 or 304 stainless and should not rust. Another really good grade is 316 SS, that is very resistant to oxidation.

Hope this helps.

I solemnly ever use bleach in my home and i would be certain to say none has ever come into contact with Charlie’s things. As for salt I would have no idea how salt could get on the bowls. :-0
Thankyou for the tip about the magnets. Surprisingly the bowls don’t react to magnets but his other bowls from his original cage do. To further make things interesting the company who sold me the bowls stopped replying to me after i showed them the photos.

I've ran into this before. Purchased 2 bowls w/ matching holders from Amazon, both discolored and one rusted after a few washes. Needless to say, I returned them. Sadly, not all stainless steel are equal and it's not immediately apparent unless the manufacturer states the type of stainless steel used (and you know the grade differences). Some have worse quality and will deteriorate even with normal use. I hope you're able to get a refund, it gets a little challenging with Ebay.

You gotta watch anything you buy on eBay, especially if it's not a "brand-name" product, but rather just a product that is advertised by a seller, and usually it's being advertised by multiple-sellers, and their prices are cents-apart...These kinds of products are sold by sellers who do "Drop-Shipping" in massive numbers. They typically sign-up with a Drop-Shipping company, choose the products they want to sell, choose the quantity they want to buy, get their bulk-pricing based on how many they are buying, then they set their prices based on how much profit they want to make, which is based on how many they buy in the first place. This is why they are usually cents-apart in pricing: one seller buys 500 of the product, the next buys 600, and they get theirs for $.05 cheaper, therefore they sell them for $.05 cheaper...And in the meantime, these Drop-Shipping companies are buying their products from cheap, wholesale factories that manufacture everything from pet products to musical instrument accessories (bit one, they sell cheap picks, guitar tuners, cables, etc.) to home goods...and they are often very cheaply-made and they do usually misrepresent their quality...

If the bowls are rusting without the use of bleach or other salts, then they aren't stainless-steel obviously, probably just plated with nickel or sterling-silver (plated only)...I'd toss them obviously at this point, kind of hard to use a water dish that rusts, lol...

In my experience, and I buy a lot on eBay and save a ton of money, only buy from either a seller who is selling a brand-name product that you can specifically look-up online and go to their website and research that specific product, or only buy from private, individual sellers who are only selling a small amount of items, or only a few, and who are not selling hundreds or thousands of cheap products at once...

Ok a little metalurgy and manf processes. All our ss cups are made by what is called deep drawing where a flat piece of stainless is hit with a die shaped by the cup. 300 ss is so malleable it will stretch to that shape with enough force. The cup shape is cut up then the edges rolled over. Viola= parrot food cups. Stamp markings on them - Viola measuring cups. All madelike that. Now if they use cheaply made or the wong grade it can rust. My problem is they always split because they didnt stress relieve the bowls. All made in....China so you are at the mercy of the intl supply chain.

I have learned so much. Thanks for the original post and replies.
