Does anyone know what type of ecelectus I have?

And Jersey Wendy as well. Lol! Popular link, and quite strongly endorsed! Ha! I've been trying to figure out where Bixby fits in by what I've seen there, but I'm still having some trouble figuring it out for sure. He was sold to me as an SI, though.

Thank you, Stephen. :)

Do you know how much Bixby weighs? "Sometimes" weight can aid / or narrow it down to ID those pretty fellows. :)

Sure thing, Wendy! I weigh my voracious boy every morning and night. His night weight tends to be somewhere between 388 and 394 grams. And in the morning, post poop, between 377 and 382.

Oh, and Bixby just turned 7 months. Thanks, Wendy. Any help in identification would be appreciated.

I will venture a guess here and say that Bixby is indeed a Solomon Island. :) Do you have photos of his back so we could see how far his tail extends from his wings while he is just perching? (Gee, did that make sense at all?)

The shape of the head "could" also indicate species.

I had a pair of Red Sided ekkies, and my female weighed 524g, the male was 509g when they were just under 1 (weight taken in the morning, after AM doo-doo, and before pigging out) :54:

Thanks, Wendy! Much appreciated! Here's what I have at the moment. The first two were taken maybe 2 months ago. The third was taken today. (Pardon the tousled look of his plumage. Ha! The crazy look in this image is a combination of his feathers still drying from a bath, and that he seems to be going into his first molt.)

Hope these pics help.

From the first picture I have to say a Vosmaeri due to the length of the tail!

Thanks, Michael. I've been wondering if he really was an SI, but I haven't seen enough species in person to be sure one way or the other.

I agree with Michael. :) I, too, now believe your Bixby is a Vos.

Looky at these 2 photos for comparison. :D

Wow. Yes, I can definitely see a resemblance. Well... except that the other vos obviously takes his preening a lot more seriously than does mine! Lol! Ah, but I do so love my perpetually tousled Bixby. Thanks so much for the input and comparison pic, Wendy. Much appreciated.

BAHAHAHAH!!! That's too funny the way you said that.

Just wait, your Bixby boy is still so young. I'm sure he'll start taking better care of his plumage as he gets older. :D

I think Bixby is a very handsome boy - he is just liking the tousled look. Lots of women pay big money to have hairstylists do that to their hair:)

Can you sort of tell between the sub species based on the beak colour? Or does it just vary from bird to bird? Cause I noticed Bixby's beak is darker than Yoshi's, so I was just wondering really.. :) Yoshi's tail seems to be a similar length though, now that he's started preening and they're not so scraggely.. :P If I ever get a picture of him where you can see clearly I'll post it here.

I don't know, Wendy. I hope you're right, of course, but unlike you I've met his brother/hatch mate. By the age of maybe three months his plumage was already immaculately groomed, every feather in place. He had already mastered that "fine hair" look for which ekkys are known. A true pretty boy, Wendy.

But Bixby? Ha! Not so much. Lol! But we chose him anyway. We loved his spunk!

Got this picture yesterday of him on Brad, it's sort of poor quality, but you can get a feel for how long he is. I'm not even gonna try to get a measuring tape near him for a while. I know he won't have it hah.

@Terry: I would tell Bixby, but I don't want to encourage his tousled ways! Lol!

@Ashley: If you're referring to the black coloring in Bixby's beak up by his nares, that's only because he is so much younger than Yoshi. Most male eclectus parrots take around a year for their beaks to completely lose their former black pigmentation. (Bixby's beak was completely black when I first met him at 4 or 5 weeks old.)

Oooh okay.. you learn something new every day! Hehe. For some reason I thought he was older :)
I agree with the others though he has a very pretty "rugged" look hehe. Plus maybe it's a tactic to attract the ladies to come groom him... haha!

Lol! I'll have to find some ladies for him, then. Maybe he would stop regurging my way for a while and share his expressions of love with them for a while! Lol!

Has Bixby had his first major molt yet? I truly do believe his feathers will get the hair-like super glow. :)

Here are a few pictures of Jasper & Gemma, the RS Eclectus I raised and cared for up until they were almost 3. :) (They are now both with a friend of mine, who dedicated an entire room for them, and yes, they are both fully flighted, too.)

Hunter & Jasper (yes, they got along)

My oldest son's GF with them (yup, they were very friendly with everyone :) )
