Does this require quarantine?

Hi all,

New to the forum and just wanted to ask a quick question.

I have a 1 year old Parrotlet. She has been isolated for a year at my place. No other contact with birds. I have moved to my girlfriend's for a week while we wait for our new flat to be ready.

She has two Zebra Finches that have a similar situation. Isolated and no contact for over a year. At the moment we have them housed in her brother's room separate from my bird. Kiwi is absolutely fine in terms of stress. She didn't mind the move. The only thing I can say is I know her, as we all know our birds behaviour.

We want to put the Finches in her room with the P'let as we caught her brother trying to take their cat in his room as he is not used to having them in there!

Do we NEED to quarantine?

I hope I do not need to. My girlfriend is going to get her own parrotlet once we have moved. This bird will definitely be quarantined as it would have been in contact with other birds etc... hopefully someone can clear this up as I may be overlooking something.

I absolutely love the pic of your Parrotlet sitting on the dresser handle barely fitting there ha! That's precious.

While it definitely pays to be careful with parrots, off the top of my head I'm not sure if Passerines (finch type) and parrots can transmit specific illness to each other. Maybe looking up on google would find info on that.

If both parties have been isolated and healthy for a year, it's most likely safe. Besides, being in the same house with the same ventilation system, even if in different rooms, is not really quarantine. There are some purists (in their own minds) that would say do it in every case, but it sounds safe. Your bird will be pretty excited to hear and see other birds

She was just turning around in that shot, I don't think so anticipated how tight it was lol! Thanks. That's interesting, and clears up some issues. I think they'll be fine.

Thanks for the reply. I emailed my breeder who said the same as you. Nothing to worry about and as you say, it would most likely be ineffective anyway.

She was very intrigued by the Finches! Watching them intensely. They aren't tame so they were in the cage. I put Kiwi (P'let) up to the cage and she made aggression sounds towards them and raised her back feathers. Enough for one day I think ha. She'll warm to them in time as long as she it treated as alpha!
