I know someone who is getting rid of their kennel, 7'x16", six feet tall, with sunshade...could i use it for the bird?

I was wondering the same thing. There is one that I thought was nice even for an aviary that was really cheap at Lowes and it seemed like it would be a good idea. The only problem I had with it was that there were a couple cracks I wasn't sure if it would be safe. But now that I think about it... I could put a smaller gaged wire around those areas... Hmmm...

i dont think a large GW macaw could get out, but would i need to put in a concrete slab?

That I am not so sure about. I was not intending on putting in a slab for mine if I were to get it. I wasn't so much worried about my Ekkie getting out, but more so getting stuck.

Hi everyone, I would recommend putting it on concrete and laying down astroturf. That is what we did at an avian rescue organization that I have previously volunteered for. Astroturf would cushion any falls, and is easy to hose off. The reason I recommend the concrete floor underneath is so that animals can't burrow their way in, and it helps during cleaning time.

I've also seen kennels used with netting draped on the outside, however I'm not sure if that presents a safety issue or not (nails getting stuck)
