So, I've been considering, for a while now, getting Skittles a doggy bed. He LOVES to roll around in clean laundry and I cannot tell you how many times I've caught him 'sitting' in my chair rubbing his face against the chair cover. As I've said many times before, he has a 'fabric fetish'. He also makes 'purring' noises and little 'squeaks' when he does that - it's just the cutest thing.

I'm wondering if anyone else has done this (buy a doggy bed for their parrot)?

I wonder if they are 'safe' for parrots. Can they get their claws caught - is the fabric toxic/safe. Also, I wonder if they have smaller ones. A friend of mine says they do.

I just don't ever want to sit on him 'accidentally'. I doubt that would ever happen - for one he ALWAYS makes his presence known when I am 'distracted' (usually on the phone). Sometimes he does manage to 'sneak away' but it's usually to one of his 'favorite spots'.

There have been a few times I've caught him on the rug. Fortunately, I've gotten so used to 'supervising him' that I find myself 'checking' areas when I walk around even after he's asleep in his cage. It's like second nature.

Well Foo has a thing for stuffed animals. I leave them in her play area's outside her cage. Even though she has never chewed them and is very delicate with them (they are like her best friends and she preens them carefully) I would trust those types of things in her cage where she can be safe and not supervised.

There are little cat beds and such that Skittles may love. Thought like Foo's toys, I would put it on his play gym where he can enjoy it when he's being supervised.

I would think as long as you choose the right bed, you should be fine. There are so many out there these days. You could make sure that it has a cover where his claws will not get caught. I would think a bed with side walls would work great for him. That way he could rub against the sides, too. :D I've seen some pretty small beds out there for the toy breeds of dogs.

I would think it would be no different then the many stuffed toys birds play with when it comes to safety.

You've got me thinking about this now. LOL! As my Coqui loves fabric, too! ;)

I just did a quick Google search for dog beds, and must say I think even those for toy breeds would be awfully big for Skittles (and costly, too).

Why not get some memory foam, cut it to the desired size, buy the fabric and sew a cover? If you're not handy with a sewing machine, I'm sure a place that alters clothes or a seamstress would be happy to sew a cover for you for a much smaller price than the cost of an actual dog bed. :)

@Mimsy01 Yeah, it would only be accessible to him when he is OUTSIDE his cage. I had to remove his second cuddle hut (that I had on the bottom of the cage) because he was chewing it. The one that hangs from the top, where he sleeps in, he doesn't chew that one. Skittles does NOT like stuffed animals, lol. ESPECIALLY stuffed birds. I actually have this scarlet macaw stuffed parrot that 'squeaks' when you squeeze it. I saw it at the pet store and I asked the clerk what that was for and she said for dogs to chew on. I said to her, that is so wrong - I'm gonna rescue that poor stuffed bird so no dog can chew it apart. I bought it, it was only $10. Pretty sad when my compassion for birds extends to stuffed animals. LOL.

@Blancaej I have not seen any of the small toy beds around here. I have looked but maybe I need to look further.

@jerseywendy Well, from my experience memory foam is quite expensive. Though this got me thinking about maybe a memory foam pillow. But I kinda want one with side walls (for Skitty).

I can sew (my mom was a seamstress) but not with a machine. My mom is retired (and has arthritis) and lives in CT. We don't have private seamstresses around here (I've looked into them before for hemming my pants) so I'd have to rely on my own sewing skills which are not that great.

What about a beanbag? If you are worried about whats in it, a simple cut, drain, refill with lentils or such?

I keep looking at cat trees for Kyo, but haven't bought one yet XD

Let us know if you find one he likes! I currently take a laundry bin and drape a towel over it, and kyo likes to snuggle up to it. However, my shoulder and neck with my hood up works great too. She will fall asleep cuddled up while I sit sometimes. I actually fell asleep too today and she woke me up with the sweetest little birdie kisses.

I think cat trees are covered in carpet right? THAT would be a concern for me.

I think that plush (like a throw) is a better material to use than towel fabric for Skitty. He kept trying to preen my chair again today so I tried something - I put a folded towel on my lap and he just had a ball.

I'm still gonna look for a small doggy bed but if I can't find one or something comparable - I may just buy a storage box/container and line it with fabric and he'll have a little play bed. I just want one side to have no wall though, so he can 'see out' since he's a nosey little bugger.
