Cockatiel
Hello! I had a quick question: I need to take my cockatiel to the vet because I want to take him for annual examinations. We have had him for a few months so I think it’s good to take him now and I was also recommended by someone on parrotsforums to take him because he might be sick. (I don’t know or think he is but it’s best to get it checked out.)

MY QUESTION: I have found out about Downey animal hospital and the reviews look good but I was wondering if someone has been there and what their experience was and how much they were charged for extra things if they got anything. It is in Guelph ON, Canada and I believe the doctor’s name is Dr. Rai.

Please let me know if you have visited them :) ā¤ļø

Since I don’t live in Canada its obvious I didn’t visit him lol-
So sorry I couldn’t help with this!
I just wanted to share this Great thread

Thank you!

Also, have not visited as it would require a crossing from US to Canada.
Since most 'reviews' are those who had less than a positive visit. It is likely a very Good News that the reviews have been good.

FYI: Most Pet Stores require a Vet Visit within 90 days of buying a Parrot.

With hope your Parrot will be okay!

Thanks for the reply! Quick question, do you know how much it usually costs for extra stuff like medication, or even nail clipping? Ik it must be different price points because you aren’t in Canada, but I was just curious 🧐

I'm also in Canada, and nail clipping is 10.00 at my vet and also requires a checkup which is based on the size of the bird. The most I have paid for the checkup and labs was $150 for our cockatoo. It was $110 for my cockatiel.
The medication depends on what it is as different meds cost different things. I believe I paid around $25 each for antibiotics & pain meds.

Seattle, US here, prices for our vet were as follows:

IDEXX Avian Comprehensive Profile - $146 - this is a complete blood profile, we do ours yearly, expect to repeat after treatment if they find any abnormalities
IDEXX Aerobic Culture (ID/Sus) - Avian/reptile - $143 - this is a culture that tests for bacterial imbalances or infection, we do this yearly, expect to repeat after treatment if they find any abnormalities
RNA Single Test (RAL) - $67 - this is testing for a specific disease, I forget which, that’s viral and required by the boarding facility here. A one time test.
DNA Test (RAL) - $60.60 - DNA sexing. It’s way cheaper to do this not through your vet, but oh well.
Polyoma/Chlamydophila/PBFD - $115 - testing for specified diseases, one time test.
Nail Trim, Medium Avian - $16
Medical Exam, Avian - $65

I’m jealous of the pricing Terry mentioned!

For meds, and again this is US pricing, we usually expect to pay $30-60 for antibiotics, depending on the amount. I think last time when Kirby was on a 3-week antibiotic regimen (it sucked) it was closer to $60. For supplements or daily meds like liver medication or heart meds, it’s closer to $30, although this may also vary.

Don’t forget also that if they find something abnormal on the comprehensive profile or in the culture you will likely be asked to come back in and re-do part or all of the panel/culture (in the case of the culture it’s the whole shebang, but the panel I believe is a combo CBC and CMP so you may only need to redo half so it’s less costly) approximately 2 weeks after finishing meds, or, in the case of something like liver disease, 3 months after the last panel, to make sure your parrot’s numbers are improving.

We have a somewhat tumultous 2-year history of expensive parrots, so you hopefully will not need all of these tests!
