well i finally found some
6.50 each ouch.
i know there was a thread with some info
but i can't seem to find it.
can anyone tell me how to prep it ?
also i know some seeds are toxic and fruit pits.
what about cantaloupe, and squash seeds?
thanks

I feed my ekkies dragon fruit when decent ones are around, they're relatively expensive (or so I thought) at £2.50, about $3 USD?

The fresher ones have more green on the pointy bits, when they start getting a bit more past it these pointy bits get brown.

Anyhow, I just chop one end off and scoop out the white and chop it into little chunks, the pink outer isn't edible. (The tiny black dot seeds inside are edible).

I've seen chris-md feed Parker one, he just chopped off the top and sat in a bowl like an egg in an egg-cup, and from what I remember, Parker practically demolished it in about 2 hours!

Here's that link to Parker:

You can also see my Bella with some dragon fruit round her beak on page 3 of my thread :

It's true. I'll cut a slice off the fruit and serve it up to him. Not he whole thing cause it's a waste, but definitely a couple slices before I serve myself sone :)

Mhm put dragon fruit in one of Lincoln's chops and he loved it. I just scooped out the insides and mashed it up. I've found this list helpful while making food for Linc

I fed dragon fruit to my flock ONCE!

The kind we have here is the kind with the red flesh. I came back into the room a few hours later and it looked like there had been a massacre! It scared the pants off me lol, it loooked like a blood bath.

My experience:

Dragon fruit - white flesh with tiny black seeds. My staff in China loves it. Salty not so much

Cactus pear - spiney outside, deep red flesh , medium seeds, think red cucumber. Salty loves it. Looks like a murder scene, though, when he eats it.

well this is a totally new fruit to me.
from 82-86 i had a produce company in
Glendale,Az and spent 3/4 hours a day everyday
in the produce distributors in Phoenix and never heard of the
stuff and i was always looking for oddities to keep on the trucks.
here is a pic it looks quite a bit bigger then what i could see in Chris's
pic. this one is slightly larger then a baseball. then Al says something about a
cactus pear, and i think it is shaped like a pear, looks like it could be part of the cactus
family. so what is it.

Sounds like you guys have the kind on the right. We only get the kind on the left. Stains worse than beets! I like it but my usual grocery store doesn't usually carry it. And I'll never feed it to the birds again! Too scary!

We get a mix, more often the white flesh but occasionally the red flesh (which I like just a tad more).

In both instances I put Parker on a pedestal table covered with a towel to feed. That pic of him on the stand was the only time he got it there.

I've been buying odd fruits for Jasper and Tillie to try. I can justify the expense because it's not really for me. ;) How do you know which one you're getting the red or white flesh. The outside looks the same right?

As far as I can tell the outside looks the same but I could be completely wrong since I've never ended up with a white one.

I also came across some of the Dragon Fruit here in South Africa, I was very surprised when I saw the fruit, and saw this post. I bought some and gave it to Khaleesi and she loves it.

well the jury is in on the dragon fruit.
tried it twice on all and the only one that
would eat it was Maxx.
so i will pass it up next time.
starfruit is next but i don't see it to often .

Parker needs some convincing with it sometimes. It's all in how you prepare it. I usually have to drizzle some melted coconut oil on or some chia/flaxseed to get him to start in on it. Once he does it's a goner.

As previously mentioned you can't really tell by the outside though I SWEAR I've noticed a size difference (could be my imagination). The sticker on the outside of the fruit usually says one way or another.
