My macaw likes to sit in the window. So I put him there quite often. He’s been screaming a lot the last few days. Every time I look out the window there was nothing. I assumed he was just screaming to scream, and randomly showed his wings out the window because he has anger issues.

Last night my husband and I were sitting outside because it was hot in our house. We rarely turn on our AC. As we were sitting there a Cooper’s hawk came out of the tree, and snatched up a black bird from the ground eating worms. Our ring camera has it on video. It’s a little graphic. The black bird flock tried to chase after the hawk but the the bird it grabbed was dead by the time it landed 6 doors down on the ground. The hawk ate the black bird, and the black bird flock sat on 2 roof tops watching the hawk eat. The black birds were making calls.

I’m a little weirded out because I take Nico for walks on my shoulder all of the time. I would have never imagined a hawk waiting in silence in a tree for the opportunity to grab a bird. My husband and I discussed it, and Nico won’t be going for walks anymore. We walk under a lot of trees, and you really can’t see what’s lurking in them. Nextly my macaw was actually screaming for reasons. I feel a little bad because I thought he just has some anger issues.

I stopped taking my CAG for walks She's in her carrier or backpack even to go to car. She's 100% the instigator. She mimics the red tail hawks. They in turn look for the intruder dive bombing area and me!

A Cooper’s hawk could certainly carry off a black bird that weights 100-150 grams. It would struggle significantly to carry off a big rock pigeon thats 300+ grams. It could certainly crush it with its claws on the ground, and eat it though. We have a friend who works at an eagle center where we used to live. Hawks are stealth 🄷 hunters, and opportunists from what I gathered.

Wow! 😳. I’ve had Cooper’s Hawks go after my full- grown free range chickens. We’re talking 4-6 pound birds. Even if they can’t fly off with it, some of the birds of prey are confident enough to eat their prey right where they kill it. Probably a good call on keeping Nico inside. Also, good for your Macaw alerting the rest of his flock to danger! Amazing how instinctive that fear is.

I called our friend just because I was so worried about Nico. I’ve never seen a hawk just hanging out in my tree before. He’s back today unfortunately. There’s a nest in there, it’s towards the top so I can’t see what’s in it. I hope I don’t have a hawk nesting in there.

We get red tails here. Once in a while there's one that lands and sits on the rail on my back deck to watch the field for a meal. Way too close for my birds' comfort when it's 8 feet away right by the window. Freaks them right out.

Among other predator species, we get bald eagles too. Years ago we had a cat sitting in the picture window, and an eagle went for it. Crashed into the window and shook the whole house. It was stunned and sat on the ground for 10 minutes or so and then flew off! Man they're huge. Thank goodness he didn't smash the window when he hit it!

It really scares me. I’ve walked under that tree countless times with Nico this spring alone. He’s always outside with me when I’m doing yard work. He really enjoys just hanging out on my shoulder outside.

I get it. Patches used to hang out on the deck with me all the time. It made him so happy. My three now are flighted (well, Avery not a strong flyer, but still capable of getting away) so I really can't take them out without a carrier. Tucker did well with the harness for a while, then decided it was a no go. I guess it's for the best to keep them safe with what's out there.

Man ever since I watched a video of a raptor taking a big cockatoo right off the shoulder of a birdshow speaker, I kinda stopped taking Salty out much on his harness. We dont have many immediately around here, but a few miles away - the county put up nest poles and sure enough, now they have hawks. Damn things are right by my fav trout fishing hole, so that went down the tubes too.

Can you encourage Blue Jays or crows to hang out nearby? They chase hawks
The city I live in a few months ago had some sort of program going to get rid of the crows. I can’t recall how they did it. I think with fake gun shots or something? I was thinking the exact same thing.

Hmmm. We have crows that wander around the yard all the time, and flocks of bluejays that love to peel the stain off of my deck. (Nesting material maybe? Annoying as heck regardless) The hawks don't seem bothered by them, but to be fair, I haven't noticed them being here at the same time. 🤷
