Parker has a love hate relationship with dragonfruit. Some days he demolishes it, others he chucks it and refuses to eat. Today is in between, eating kinda slowly. He needed some inducement so I Threw in some hemp seeds for good measure. It worked :)

That is one I haven't tried...I am going to have to get one for my flock to try. You just give Parker a chunk?

Yep! It's roughly yam/sweet potato shaped, depending on how I read his mood I might give him half of it, or I will cut a thick wheel out of it. Whatever is left I eat. I love it, the flavor is somewhere between melon and pear.

Chris, thank you for sharing, I am not going to pass it by next time! I think I will try it myself, too.

Interesting Chris, I have to be honest and say I haven't seen them before

My girls like these too. Although I did see them for the first time this season in the supermarket and they were charging nearly $50 per kilo. It was ridiculous.

We usually only get the white fleshed ones but occasionally we get the bright pink fleshed ones. They look so inviting.

And after 2 hours of nonstop eating this was the result

Bundiibird - we have the same set up here. Maybe more 50/50 mix from the grocery store, never know which t will be. I agree, love the look of the pink flesh. But they stain so horribly!

Cameron, keep an eye out for them. Absolutely worth trying for both you and your two 2 babies.

Terry, do it :) the flavors are somewhat subtle. I've seen some complain they are flavorless, which I could see. But I find subtle flavors in bland foods so I'm a bit odd in that respect. It's also a texture thing with some. The black seeds add a grainy texture but I kind of like it. You don't chew per se, more mash with your tongue so you aren't biting down on hundreds of seeds.

Does Parker seem to prefer one colour over the other?
I am going to have Reg pick up one tomorrow if he can find one. I am really interested to try one now.

Thanks for sharing and will also look out for Dragon Fruit also, an inducement of what to expect is all that is required sometimes LOL. Great to see that Parker seemed to enjoy his.

Terry, I can't say definitely. The 50/50 rule seems to cut both colors. I want to say he might have a SLIGHT, almost imperceptible affinity towards red. But I could be making tha up. If it's anything like my grocery store you may not have a hockey in which you get; sometimes white is available, sometimes red.

Never heard of the stuff...interesting..is it seasonal Chris,or an all year type of thing? I'd like to see what Amy and Beebs would think (me too!)

Jim

Jim I believe we have it available off and on throughout the year. No real seasonality that I can see.

Jolly and Maya LOVE dragonfruit! And I rather enjoy it myself. But it's availability hereabouts tends, unfortunately, to be hit or miss. Haven't seen them in my local fruit shop in a while, now.

They're from Mexico, and usually available further South year around. In Spanish we call them "pitayas". They're mildly sweet and somewhat like kiwis in taste.

Thanks so much for sharing Chris. I've picked up dragon fruit a half dozen times in the grocery store and then I just put it back. I'll be sure to put it in the basket next time.
Also, is it just me, or is Parker looking more feathered than ever?
