Yes, birds are messy. I feed Harrison's & it isn't cheap. For the longest time my conure, Rocket made "soup" in her water dish, wasting about as much as she devoured. By switching the water bowl across from food, & adding gravity-fed water beside her pellets, I broke her of soup-making. So then I felt sorry for her!
Now it appears that she has compensated for wasting soggy nugs by allowing a huge amount of food to go under the bottom grid and pile up on the newspaper below. I actually studied her table manners only to see kibble literally dribbling from her beak. Apparently domestic birds have nio sense of conserving resources, nor concern that food may run out?

They sure can make a mess!! Very common for them to toss on the floor, or really anywhere! This reminds me of a Chicken Thoughts comic:

A common, annoying and expensive problem. Birds scatter food in the wild too. I had same problem with food and water. Unfortunately at the time I was working 12 hr shifts. With drive time and fatigue it could've been 14-16 hours before new food/water checks. Easy was a water bottle same as those used for dogs, rabbit etc cages. Then the search for food dish. I found an enclosed clear maybe food dish (don't know material). Designed to go in cage. Inside has two separate areas, small for food and large w perch for bird. For me it dramatically reduced pellet waste. Disadvantages: my CAG uses water bottle as her shower. She manipulates the ball to for fair amounts of water drainage. This isn't daily (thank goodness). The feeder is expensive. This one is 18 yrs old so cost balanced out nicely. It can be awkward to clean. My CAG goes in removes a pellet, leaves. She carries pellet to her favorite perch. Nibbles on it. But, she's eating more of each pellet. I think because she's got to put effort in.
