Hi all I have read somewhere that once you have a play schedule with your eclectus you have to follow that for the rest of your n their lives. Is this true?

If you have a schedule with your bird what is it?

I don't think this is true. But Chico is on a schedule of sorts. I play with him in the AM before work and in the PM after work. On weekends I can play with him all day. I don't think he would freak out if things change unless it were a drastic reduction of interaction time.

We have no set schedule here at all and all my birds are fine including the eclectus pair!

I don't keep any kind of strict schedule with my ekkie girl or my macaw boys. They accept it & so far none seem the least bit put out by not having a set schedule for play.

I try to keep a strict schedule. I put my ekkies to bed around 8pm every night and uncover them around 8am every night. My schedule varies by about 30mins at the most. I feed them around the same time everyday too, give or take 15-30mins.

Thanks for your comments. For those who don't have a set schedule do you just put your bird to sleep and have feeding times at different times everyday?
Thanks

I highly recommend keeping a schedule, btw.

Feeding time varies depending on when we get up in the morning cause we both work a lot while both of us trying to manage stores so our schedules are odd, but sleep time is same every night as we have timers for lighting that goes off same time every night. But I take them out at any time so there is no set schedule! I haven't had a set schedule for my birds the past 16 years, my only set schedule is handfeeding the babies and that is it! They're animals, not machines!!!

I definitely don't have a routine at all. I don't want 40 odd parrots screaming for a feed or in the case of my companion parrots yelling at a precise time to have time out.

Babies i don't have a specific time i feed because i can be up anywhere between 3 to 5 am. As long as they get the required feeds in 24 hours doesn't really matter what time i feed them.

I have made the mistake of letting 1 of my parrots out at a certain time & watch out if i am late he drives me nuts with his constant irritating noise.

It's just if you make things to routine you are a slave to your parrots. IMO they should fit into our very busy lifestyle.

That's interesting Pedro. I was bombarded with information about how important it is to keep eclectus parrots on a schedule, and how it makes them feel more secure, and less stressed, etc. I'm surprised with your post, and maybe will relax more now! It was getting stressful for me, because human lives have more variation!

I to read many things about keeping an ekkie on a schedule. mine is on workdays, she even knows it but she will not scream or pitch a fit on my off days when i feed her later than normal so i can sleep in a bit. However once i walk toward her cage and open her bowl doors she gets on her the perch on her cage door she knows i will open the cage door and pick her up. She then gets to watch me wash her bowls and prepare her food she walks toward my cutting boards edge and watch as i pull all her goodies out of the fridge and onto the breakfast bar.

She also figured out that around 12 is her shower time, i didnt intent to have a shower time for her but it seems around 1130 -12 is when i take a break from work and i give her a bath she will get on her door perch again waiting but wont fuss if i am late.

Now play time for my ekkie varies. I have no schedule for this as I have a conure to and i do not train them together. Now my eckie always has access to her play area on top of her cage when i am home because sometimes she just gets moody and i dont make her play or try to train her when she is moody
