Kiwi Stardust - a green cheek conure
Hey parronts!

Kiwi wandered to the top of her cage today into a dark corner and started to make these low clucking and purring noises. She then started to shred some of the newspaper lining before pressing her face to the ground and her butt in the air. It almost looked like she was trying to poop, but nothing came out. She did this a few times.

Is she trying to lay an egg? What should I do if she does? Any tips and advice?

Can you feel the lump when you gently press her lower belly?
If yes I would consider a call to the vet. Being egg bound can be deadly.
If no but your worried about girls and egg issues, start her on red raspberry leaf herbal / tea. Add dry to her food or try adding to her water and see if she's birdie tea :)

She might be in the mating mood as well!!! But do check her lower belly area. Press gently, not hard!! You need to keep an eye on her as it's been mentioned above, egg binding is deadly!!! Bring her to a vet if she have an egg within her. Make sure you provide calcium supplements if she is trying to lay eggs cause she will do it again.

Thank you! I'll check her belly for an egg. I will try the herbal tea and calcium as well. Actually she is due for her yearly checkup so I'm going to bring her in to the vet anyway. Hopefully she is just in her mating mood…but wouldn't eggs result from that as well? Oh my, my little girl, or possibly boy, is growing up so fast *tears up*

Thanks again!

Hens can be hormonal, but eggs don't always result in that. In conures, males and females can display the same behaviors, so no guarantee of sex either way.

Hopefully, she's just 'in the mood' and not looking to lay eggs!
