I picked up an eggplant today at the grocery store as I thought it was on the safe list, but when I did a quick Google search I'm seeing a few conflicting answers.

If I peel it, is it safe to feed raw?

Thanks! :green2: Wanted to give Jasper something new to try.

Eggplant needs to be soaked in salt water for several hours then cooked fully, even for us to eat. Soaking it draws out certain compounds in the eggplant that cause bitterness and an unpleasant texture. Because eggplant dishes are typically high in salt, I probably wouldn't offer more than a little nibble to the birds (cooked).

I think eggplant makes a wonderful fall table decoration :) Otherwise I have no use for it and I wont feed my fids anything I wouldnt eat. 'Nuff said!

I'm so glad I asked! I could have sworn it was safe. Chopped it all up last night but threw it out immediately when I read the replies. Many thanks for all of your replies!
