A cockatiel, a bourke, and three budgies
The past couple days, Elvis has had an orange tint to the feathers around his beak, this morning he was fluffed up and shivering, so I asked dad to schedule a vet appointment. Elvis is now in quarantine until I can get him to the vet tomorrow. It is the earliest day I can get, since dad has to take the dog to a vet that same day.
Due to lack of cages, I sectioned off one cage, the budgies in one side, Jordan in the other, and Elvis will have the empty cage. The cage will NOT be placed in the same room as the other cage, and the birds shall not meet Elvis until safe to do so.
Everything will stay this way until farther notice.

Elvis couldn't have caught an illness from me could he? Maybe it's nothing, maybe it's something. I'll know for sure tomorrow.

What? I thought you fostered all your birds, and just got Jordan back. Now you have all of them again?

Best of luck to Elvis.
he is a real sweetheart.

The one fostering the 3 had to move out to Wisconsin for family matters back on Saturday.

I've been skeptical from the start for a reason. It's best we don't even bother.

At least they are getting vet care now.

I didn't bother making a thread about why I got them back, so it is best if you don't bother.

My social life already went out the window, there is no use for me to try to regain it.
My best friend moved to Wisconsin, I wasn't going to let her take my birds with her. OK?

His appointment went well, said he has fatty liver disease. Vet said its caught early.
I was told to have more veggies and less seed in his diet, and that he needs to exercise more. I don't see how that will help but he is overweight so I guess more exercise will have some effect.

Also, the signs of illness I saw where nothing, the orange on his feathers was caused by his food, and the fluffed up and shivering was because I had accidentally left a window open the night before, I kept his appointment just in case, and I'm glad I did.

I was told they did tests on him, but when I saw the bill, they didn't! They did do X-rays but is that a reliable way to know if he has fatty liver disease?

Generally for fatty liver disease, the diagnoses only needs x-rays to be supported. If he's overweight and displays other symptoms I'm sure your vet was correct.

Edit: there ARE liver biopsy tests, but they aren't necessary to diagnose fatty liver disease

Glad his FLD was caught early! Changing diet is challenging but well worth the effort.

so.... whats the long term diagnosis for a bird that has had this disease caught early? How old is elvis?

Is it manageable or is it always eventually fatal?

The vet didn't give me much detail about the disease itself. :/
Elvis will be 2 in September.

Vet said it was most likely caused by over feeding while he was being handfed as a baby. I have yet to contact his breeder to get the info about that.

I'm having trouble following your threads. You had these birds, then re-homed, then took them back, and along the way, many troubles with sibling(s), parents are now apparently supervising vet work, etc.?
Any chance your parent(s) could post here and help us find a solution?

wow, I had no idea they could develop that at such a young age! I thought it took years of unhealthy diet! Now I worry about jazz

My parents are busy, but I can see if my grandfather has the time to explain things if that would work instead?

Also, I'm the one paying the bills, not my parents. They just drive me. My friend had to move, so I brought my birds back. I did FOSTER them out, not permanently re-home them.

They are getting vet care, that's all you need to know. Just forget the past, the past doesn't matter anymore.

I'm trying to be very gentle, but please understand that the past DOES matter. The mistakes we make as individuals shouldn't be forgotten or brushed aside, especially when they involve another life.

I understand that you're embarrassed and afraid of criticism, and I know you want this community validation, but please remember that we have the best intentions as a whole.

I'm really glad you're seeking vet care, and I'm proud of you, but you can't ask anyone to forget mistakes- that's unreasonable

I'm terribly confused. did something happen?

@yumgrinder This poster has a previous reputation of an unsafe environment for their birds, and she has told some troubling lies. She asks us often to "forget about the past", but I don't think that's appropriateb

I understand it's unreasonable, but it was MY mistakes that I made. I'm asking them to "forgive and forget", I'm not asking myself to do that, I'll never forgive myself for letting my birds get harmed. I do learn from my mistakes, even though it might take some time, and it might not seem like it, but I do eventually learn from them. Mistakes are what make us human.
