LOST GALAH COCKATOO IN DOWNEY, LA COUNTY, 7 MONTHS OLD, PINK AND GREY. RESPONDS TO ‘MISCHIEF.’

I hate to make this post, I can’t believe it’s happening. Can’t believe it’s my second post like this. We installed double screen doors and automatic door closers and had a strict policy about open/closed doors. My dad leaned his head out to say goodbye to me when I was driving and she darted out, flew off immediately, didn’t even circle like Grim did.

I live in Downey, California. She flew towards the direction of Rio San Gabriel park, which is ESE from us. If anyone lives here or has family here please keep an eye out. Unlike Grim she’s a confident flyer and knows how to descend, and she likes being on the ground. She’s had target training, and responds about 75% of the time, but only with treats. I hope at least that means something, though.

It’s peak migratory season for hawks but not nesting season, so I doubt they’ll be hunting in pairs like last time. I’ve also seen a plethora of crows and other small corvids. My neighbors who saw Grim get taken said they haven’t seen the hawks in weeks. I asked construction workers working on the street where Grim was taken about hawks and they said there hasn’t been sightings. I really feel that if she doesn’t get taken by hawks, that we’ll find her eventually, given time. If someone doesn’t decide to keep her as a pet. We will monitor local listings.

We put her cage in the front yard, and her tall perch in the backyard. I’m gonna put her small perch on the roof I think. We put up posters, made a post on Facebook, and the Ring app. I told the local elementary school with a big field to keep an eye out. If anyone has recommendations for other places to post it would be much appreciated. If anyone is in the area, she responds to ‘Mischief’ or ‘Mischie’ (pronounced Mis-chee).

I don’t want to say ‘I can’t go through this again’ because that puts the focus on me, and not her, and she’s the one in danger, but I truly don’t know what I’ll do without her. I’m not sure what my dad will do, either. She helped us heal after Grim. She’s been our North Star. I am so, so afraid, and I’m really struggling to hold onto hope. I’ve heard people find their birds after months, but sometimes they’re never found again, too.

She spends the most time with my dad, and he’s been going around the neighborhood calling for her. I was riding around on my bike, came inside to regroup, but I’m gonna join him again.

Also—I’ve heard parrots are bad at finding their way home on their own, but we’ve been fostering a rooster for someone in the backyard, and he crows all day. I’m not sure if she would’ve heard him from inside, but if so, do you think that sound would act like a beacon for her?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. She’s my world.

I'm so sorry @Francie Mae, there are few worse feelings in the world than watching your baby fly away! Pet birds who find themselves in unfamiliar territory like this will often land on or close by another human, looking for safety or food from them. So do make sure you alert all Facebook community groups in your area, distribute paper flyers in your neighbourhood, post on www.parrotalert.com and look for "found birds" there too, and alert as many vet clinics as you can, whether they are avian specialists or not. And I'm posting Parrot Alert's tips for helping find lost birds for you too...

I pray you manage to get Mischief back soon! 🙏 🙏 🙏

I’m am so, so sorry you and your family are living through this a second time 😢. It sounds like you are doing a good job getting the word out to people in the area and that’s the best thing to do; the more sets of eyes looking out for Mischief, the better. You didn’t mention in your post, but if you haven’t, contact animal control in your county and the surrounding ones. Also, alert local vet offices or better yet, put up posters there if you haven’t. Many people call animal control, the police, or vets when they find a lost pet. I am praying you find Mischief 🙏

Thank you so, so much. I put an alert out, and we made a FB post and one on the Ring app. People on Facebook said they’ve also lost their birds in our city, but got them back by leaving their cages out. I just don’t know if she’ll be able to find it.

I also gave a flyer to the local elementary school, and will to the middle school, too. There’s lots of people there and dropped food, so maybe she’d go that way. She flew in the opposite direction, though, towards the park, but past the park is the freeway. I’m hoping she wouldn’t want to fly that way.

Thank you so much. We live by a Seaca, so I’ll contact them. I don’t think they house birds but other people might call them if they spot her. I’m hoping a bird with a pink head will get people’s attention. Would like people to notice, but not hawks.

I hope you find your Mischeif. It sounds like you are doing all of the right things to find her. An older couple lost their cockatiel 2 years ago in my neighborhood, and were frantically searching after he flew away. He was found within hours, and returned home. The neighbors ring alarm app was helpful in this situation. It still warms my heart. I will keep Mischief, and you in my thoughts. Hopefully she is returned home safely.
