LOST GALAH COCKATOO IN DOWNEY, LA COUNTY, 7 MONTHS OLD, PINK AND GREY. RESPONDS TO ‘MISCHIEF.’
I hate to make this post, I can’t believe it’s happening. Can’t believe it’s my second post like this. We installed double screen doors and automatic door closers and had a strict policy about open/closed doors. My dad leaned his head out to say goodbye to me when I was driving and she darted out, flew off immediately, didn’t even circle like Grim did.
I live in Downey, California. She flew towards the direction of Rio San Gabriel park, which is ESE from us. If anyone lives here or has family here please keep an eye out. Unlike Grim she’s a confident flyer and knows how to descend, and she likes being on the ground. She’s had target training, and responds about 75% of the time, but only with treats. I hope at least that means something, though.
It’s peak migratory season for hawks but not nesting season, so I doubt they’ll be hunting in pairs like last time. I’ve also seen a plethora of crows and other small corvids. My neighbors who saw Grim get taken said they haven’t seen the hawks in weeks. I asked construction workers working on the street where Grim was taken about hawks and they said there hasn’t been sightings. I really feel that if she doesn’t get taken by hawks, that we’ll find her eventually, given time. If someone doesn’t decide to keep her as a pet. We will monitor local listings.
We put her cage in the front yard, and her tall perch in the backyard. I’m gonna put her small perch on the roof I think. We put up posters, made a post on Facebook, and the Ring app. I told the local elementary school with a big field to keep an eye out. If anyone has recommendations for other places to post it would be much appreciated. If anyone is in the area, she responds to ‘Mischief’ or ‘Mischie’ (pronounced Mis-chee).
I don’t want to say ‘I can’t go through this again’ because that puts the focus on me, and not her, and she’s the one in danger, but I truly don’t know what I’ll do without her. I’m not sure what my dad will do, either. She helped us heal after Grim. She’s been our North Star. I am so, so afraid, and I’m really struggling to hold onto hope. I’ve heard people find their birds after months, but sometimes they’re never found again, too.
She spends the most time with my dad, and he’s been going around the neighborhood calling for her. I was riding around on my bike, came inside to regroup, but I’m gonna join him again.
Also—I’ve heard parrots are bad at finding their way home on their own, but we’ve been fostering a rooster for someone in the backyard, and he crows all day. I’m not sure if she would’ve heard him from inside, but if so, do you think that sound would act like a beacon for her?
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. She’s my world.
