I found Everbilt brand sisal rope. it says natural and biodegradable. It doesn't smell like it has chemicals. But the Everbilt manila rope also says all natural and but it smells like it has lots of chemicals. Ibelieve Everbilt is a home Depot brand. The only thing I found in reference to chemicals was this response from "Supplier Quality" in response to several people asking specifically if this brand had harmful chemicals. Should it be safe? Notoce hazards to mammals but.not avian species.

The sisal rope is treated with Softening Flax Oil. An MSDS sheet is available and notes Hazards to wild mammals: No Hazards to avian species: No Hazards to aquatic organism: No

Here is the link to one of the ropes

Flax oil doesn’t smell like that! Not worth the risk! Nice cotton rope is another choice! Tractor supply stores tend to carry it. Just watch it for frayed strings!

Edit: it just occurred to me, there is always a very real risk in where it is being stored!

You can order safe rope online--Amazon etc. I wouldn't use anything that I was unsure of (especially if it has a smell and especially if you don't know exactly what is in it). Mammals are way LESS sensitive than birds, so it is hard to imagine anything that was hazardous to mammals but not hazardous to birds...

I figured as much. I has found and bought bird safe sisal rope on amazon before bir i just happened to walk past the ropes in home depot so i thought i'd check it out.

looks safe at face value---supervision is the key---you know those cloth cotton rope perches that they sell? Many bird have issues due to ingesting bits of the string over time (and this results in intestinal blockage etc). If your bird chews it and may swallow it, you would be better of with something more digestible.

I did read about it. I have 2 boings in his cage, but I check them daily. All the other rope things are sisal rope. I was just going to make another cargo net out of cotton cuz my fingers are raw from the sisal LOL I'll add gloves to my cart.
