So LuLu has began to excessively call out to me even when I'm standing a few feet away. Her cage is in the living room and she can see out the window. She will call out if cats go past or if someone walks past which is very annoying because I like to keep my curtains open during the day. She will also call out if someone knocks on the door or if she heard someone out in the hallway. She'll call out if I go into another room even if I answer her calls. How can I get her quiet down? She used to be really quiet, and only call out if I had guests over but now she does it all the time. I've resorted to putting her cage in my bedroom. She tends to calm down then but I want her to be able to see and interact with people.

Does she call more/louder if you ignore her? I'm thinking rewarding her for being quiet might be an idea? So, if she calls, wait until she calms and rush over with a treat and praise. My fids are not noisy so I'm just going on what I learned here. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly. :)

Your bird has taken on the role of the "Flock Sentry."

In his mind, he is looking out for "his flock" and warning you of potential predators. I'm not sure there is anything you can do other than temporarily closing the curtains.

This isn't screaming per say. Your bird is bonded, and he thinks he's doing his job, getting your back... so the cat doesn't get you.

Out and about training might help reduce this. As he encounters more and more strange things out there in the world, less and less will set him off when he comes home...

My 40 yo lilac crowned amazon still alerts me to strangers in the neighborhood.

My greenwing will occasionally scream (full greenwing volume) at the neighborhood cats... but that is as much entertainment value as anything.

Birdman666 has it right. Chico does the same thing. I call it his Stranger Danger Alert squawk. Usually it is a single squawk. These are their natural voices. His flock call squawk is slightly less vocal. I am an expert at telling the difference. He has a third squawk that is even louder than the Stranger Danger Alert and he may fire off several in a row. He uses this for emergency use only. As Birdman says, get him socialized and he will not go off every time and reduce his view of passer by'ers. I have a security camera on him that sends me an email alert when sound or movement is detected. I may get a dozen alerts in the day. Most are later in the day when the sun gets low in the sky.

There is some kind of tree stands or table tops in every room in my house except the kitchen. There is even one in my bathroom. :o
I find most of my ekkies like to hang out in whatever room I am in. I spend individual time with them as well as them all hanging out together and they will still call on occasion. I think because you have a single girl it might be even more important to include her in more of your activities. The females once they find a good nesting site spend a lot of time calling for males to come feed them. Does your girl have lots foraging, shredding toys? I will even weave big greens like Chard or kale through the bars, they waste a lot but eat some as well.
I would also consider moving her cage away from the window, you will get less alarm calls that way and still be able to leave your curtains open.

I agree with all the posts and don't have much to add except that I do tote Oliver around where ever I go in the house so he can see what I'm doing. With that said, I also give him some alone time so he is independent and not clingy. So far, it works like a charm. My issue is that my housekeeper makes odd noises and whistling while she cleans and now Oliver does too. Also, sometimes he sounds like a little puppy whining...must be one in the neighborhood he hears when I'm working. Gotta love these beautiful feathered kids...never ever a dull moment!
