Gracie, our Blue Fronted Amazon.
At what weight should I start being concerned for my blue front? Gracie is 12 oz now, shortly after we got her she weighed in at 10. Something oz. She absolutely refuses to eat ANY fruit and any veggies other than cooked potatoes [emoji2356] she will go freaking crackers over some nice birdy style mashed potatoes. I need to use that to my advantage and make her a nutritious blend of like sweet potatoes and a fresh veggie blend. Mostly shes started rejecting her regular pellet and seed diet for ONLY nutriberries since we introduced them as a treat. Fortunately it's got what she needs and she isn't picky at all, she just sucks them down then forages the droppings. Blah blah blah- the point is, when is my bird considered fat?

Pic is her googling over my husband. Shes absolutely obsessed with him.

I can't give you a specific answer but you need to get a scale that measures in grams.

This is just a guess cuz it depends on how big your amazon is but around 500 grams is a close average. Blue fronted amazons are among the larger of the species.

Lots of Amazon snobs around here may be able to give you a closer target weight.

12 oz. is only 340 grams.

That’s on the light side for just about all Amazons, and I think way light for blue fronted, depending on age.

Yeah what I saw on google is the average range is from 8oz - 16ish oz is average and normal. Gracie is 9 and shes a bit petite compared to most other Amazon's I've seen, but it make sense to me because she was raised in likely a meth house. I'm not fully sure of that claim, but I know that when I picked her up, they smoked cigarettes in the house, it wreaked and was FILTHY! She had like a disgusting film on her feathers and never had a proper diet, just walmart generic parrot food, coffee, and potato chips. We have only had her since October 31st so we are still adjusting her existence [emoji4][emoji258]

Your girl is by no means fat, what-so-ever! In fact, for her age, she has more of a youthful girlish figure and has yet to develop the more common Adult Amazon body -- more compacted in appearance.

Of the three common Blue-fronted Amazons, their common Adult weight is more in around 400 to 550 grams. The nominate (standard) Blue-fronted Amazon weight is at the lower end of the scale 400 to 480 range. Your's appears to be a transitional between the nominate BFA and the nominate YWA (Yellow-winded Amazon), which is 475 to 525 range.

Point in that Amazon Snob tour above is that your girl is far from fat... The last BFA I saw at that weight was from a so very inbred group that they had seriously muted body color it was hard to define them as Amazons. Your girl, with a healthy diet will catch-up over the next five to eight years, so forget about her being underweight and target on her chowing down a healthy diet.

The huge family of Amazons range from just under 300 grams all the way up to the Mealy Amazons, which come in at a very light 700 grams... :D

Note: It's a bit of a pain, at first, but our Avian Vets work with metric weights so us Avian folk have forced ourselves to as well. When you get a scale, assure that it has a gram read-out and join the rest of us suffering this odd World of Avian medical care.

Haha thank you! We have a really nice scale for her that I think does grams [emoji4] I just have to switch it over. This is great information! She certainly acts like a snarky teenager [emoji23] when we first got her I tried training her a bit and got as far as managing to get her to step up for me and to touch my finger without biting it- after all that she decided she doesnt like me but LOVES my husband [emoji2356][emoji2368] we have a LOT of work to do with her still, and a long way to go, but we are on our way!

Amy is middle aged...turned 30 y.o. a short time ago and is dna'd male  Not sure if males are beefier than females but he weighs in at 507-515 grams

What the hell were you doing during your teenage years?

During mine, 1 oz. equals 28.35 grams was drummed into my head on a daily basis.

At my advanced age, the World was just beginning to believe in plate tectonics and weather was based on what was happening a State or two, to our West and Southwest. Metric was a fuzzy hazes on a distance shore...

LOL, 40 yrs ago, a guy fromGermany came to our comapny to give a seminar, the main thrust was "In 10 years the world will be metric". 40 years later, well not so much.

And today, in charming England, one travels the roadways at MPH (miles per hour), purchase bacon by the pound (lbs), and enjoy beer by the pint. But, diesel and gasoline is purchase by the liter, etc...
