I'm able to get close to Jasper without him getting nervous. He turned around on the cage bars and I noticed that his feathers around where I suspect his vent to be are pinkish red. It doesn't look like it's blood stained. It does look more like a feather color. I looked around the cage and there's no blood. I'm thinking that he's OK. I just wanted to double check. I looked for pictures of their vents online but found nothing. Search vent and I get "venting people" not what I needed.

I'm really wondering what the heck did I get myself into. Seriously feeling a little overwhelmed about my lack of knowledge. Anyone have a great Grey Book that they'd recommend? I've love to take some classes but I'm not finding anything even remotely in my area.

Deep breath, your baby is likely not bleeding. Although blood first appears red to pink, it quickly turns much darker in color.

There are great Parrot Medical Books available and also great online Avian Medical Sites.

Aloha,
just to let you know my CAG's feathers are pinkish red around her vent.

I love this place... if only I had had something similar when I was a new Rickeybird owner.
Such quick reassurance and education for newer owners.
I *HEART* Parrot Forums.

I did a couple of searches and this was the best photo I could find of an African Grey's vent area feathers (at least the best photo where the bird wasn't plucked or something like that). The circled area is just showing the bird had diarrhea and showing the poop stuck to the feathers, but the feathers surrounding the bird's vent are definitely pink/red...
