Hummers nest in one of our trees, and are often busy feeding on the copious plants that wifey provides.

Yesterday, she brought home a feeder and bottle of hummingbird nectar from Petco. It's contents are water, sugar, citric acid, and a preservative. Can this be as good as flower nectar?

I learned long ago that digestion is much the same process as rotting, so anything that retards spoilage also retards digestion. Think about the sausage and hot dogs you've eaten that seem to take a long time to digest.

Should I convince her to take it all back?

Double check but I think to make your own it is four parts water brought to a quick boil with one part granulated sugar. Cool then fill feeders. You don,t need to add red coloring. . I used to feed the hummers when I lived in Mass.but that was 4 years ago The proportion of sugar to water is important because you do not want to stress their livers and they have a very high metabolism. I used to change it every other day . clean the feeder and fill with a fresh solution. I ued to make enough for a week and keep in the fridge:D
