Female Eclectus Parrots

I got this in my email this morning. I have a male Ekkie. He really is wonderful to me. I consider him my “calm” parrot of the bunch. He steps up when asked, and is incredibly friendly to who he considers his flock. Are females Ekkie’s aggressive to their owners? Not ones that are babies, and haven’t hit puberty yet but adult female Ekkie’s… they sound so aggressive from what I’ve read about. Are they not able to be handled?

Growing up, my mother had a female and male ekkies. The female (“Honey Child”) was as sweet as could be! I used to lay her on her back in a tissue box.

The males were sort of nice. One always used to pick fights with my macaw (tried to bite his feet) and he bit a big hole in my fine, buttery soft Italian leather coat as I passed by his cage. He lost a lot of points due to the leather coat incident.

I just caution judging or expectations of any individual parrot measured by published generalizations of character and temperament. Each parrot is , well, it's own bird so to speak.

my girl was sweet up till age 4, i could turn her on her back and give her tummy kisses, etc. then she turned aggressive. I feel like she just cant help herself. From what ive read, its the females...not the males, that are in charge of defending the nest, young, and territory. nature just made them that way. I do know that not all mature females are aggressive but alot of them are. She is also extremely nesty all the time, year round.

They can be super sweet. But as noted above they are usually nest bound and therefore nest defenders. And hormones with them can be more problematic than the males, precisely because of above.

Dont know about Ekkies but I know that female budgies are the dominant more aggressive ones in a pair or flock. If their breeding habits/gender roles are similar it would make sense that female Ekkies CAN BE more "aggressive". Each bird is very much an individual so generalizations are just that.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ve met other Ekkie’s but most parrots in general I’ve met aren’t fond of stepping up for strangers so I was unable to really gather an opinion. I was mentally curious if the stories I’ve read are true about female Ekkie’s, and if they are as sassy as described. The person who I adopted my macaw from had a female Ekkie. She described her as not very sociable, or needy as Nico my male. Her female Ekkie could do without human interaction from the sounds of it.
