Hi everyone.....I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I've had my 18 year old female eclectus parrot for 16 years, prior to her coming to me she had health problems and was alway at the vet and on medication and supplements. She has only been ill once or twice since then, she was bitten by a dog 13 years ago resulting in her becoming a feather plucker after almost 3 months in a body bandage, she plucks her back and belly but not her wings.
She eats only fresh fruit and vegetables and I make her own seed and nut mix, she also enjoys yoghurt, cooked chicken and occasionally small amount of cooked pasta or rice. When my partner and split she got to spend a lot more time with me and quickly started making herself a nest and to my surprise layed an egg....follows by 2 more in the next 10 days, my vet advised me to take the egg away from her and remove her nest. She now regularly lays 1 to 3 eggs within about a 10 day period every few months even if she hasn't made a nest anywhere she will lay them from her perch in her cage. She usually comes off the egg after a few hours and doesn't seem to be stressed about it when she sees the egg gone. Sometimes after she had layed and I had removed the egg she would be grumpy towards me and make an excruciating high pitched noise for a few days but only towards me and only ever lasting about 2 days. About 2 months ago she started making a nest and proceeded to lay 2 eggs. I followed the same procedure as all previous eggs and removed it and the nest, she reacted the same as always. She has never lost her appetite and still wants to be out of her cage and with me. She has and has always had her own bedroom and gets minimum 8 hours solid sleep every night, she also has her routine and is fed and watered, put to bed and woken up around the same time daily. But over a month later she is still making this high pitched noise but only when she can see me or is alone with me. I've also occasionally noticed her making herself vomit during this time. If there is someone else in the house she doesn't make the noise. She still want to come out and play with her toys but doesn't want to be cuddled and instead now prefers to sit on me and flap her wings and continue to make this noise, it is a painfully high pitched sound that leaves your ears ringing. She has not layed any more eggs but has made herself a nest and did sit on a small wooden ball for a few weeks but has since lost interest in that. She has annual check ups and is a healthy slightly overweight partially bald eclectus but still beautiful to me. Personally I think she's going through some type of birdy menopause or something. I have not taken her to the vet for 1 she hates the vet and 2 they always judge because she plucks and I hate that! I know my baby and can tell when she is not well so I am not concerned that she is sick and have been trying to ride this out but I'm not sire how much more my ears can take! Sorry for the long message, I wanted to explain as much as I could. Can anyone tell me why she is acting like this and give me some advice on what to do please?

Hi Priscilla, and welcome to the forums. :)

I'm so sorry to hear you girl's been testing your hearing. There are a few things you could try.

Move the cage to a new location and re-arrange everything in it. That 'may' just peak her interest so that she will perhaps cease with the hollering.

As for her previous broodiness: I would never remove the eggs, but instead leave them in there with her. She may wish to sit on them, or she may ignore them. In any case, if you leave them with her for about 3-4 weeks, and THEN remove them, chances are she will wait a good while longer before laying her next clutch. :)

Hello Priscilla, welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry your lovely girl is having problems.

I agree wholeheartedly with the advice JerseyWendy gave you. If eggs are taken away, the bird will often keep laying to replace them.

Your girl sounds like a sweetheart, we'd love to hear more about her.
