Recently, I mean, yesterday, the budgies moved into the new cage (I'll be posting an update later :) )

Right now, Arrow (the yellow one in my sig pic) has been "panting" with her mouth opening and closing at a rapid/faster rate that goes the same speed with her tail bob. ---SHe has a natural bob because she's overweight, so her balance isn't perfect, but it barely affects her---

Anyways, could it be the heat? The temperature is getting pretty high at 90 right now, and my room doesn't have the best circulation. Or could it be more serious? I have never heard her sneeze unless its after she rubs her beak on something or drink water. There's been no discharge, puffiness, inactivity, or droopiness.

I am of course, going to try take her into my nearest vet before it becomes serious but I'm really hoping that it's something that will go away on it's own.

Sounds like a hot bird to me. That's how they relieve heat- by opening their beak, panting and slightly opening their wings (kind of a drooping). Try giving her light mistings throughout the day to cool her down and a daily soaked to the bone bath. Make sure she has lots of fresh water and up her fruit intake (try juicy ones like melon or grapes). Birds do occasionally sneeze too without it being anything sinister- dust, seasonal allergies ext...

Edit: Wanted to add, they may be less active than normal and just a little "off" in the heat too. I mean, do YOU feel like running around and being super active when it's hot out? Neither do they:) Kiwi suffered with the rest of us through the summer heat (and no A/C) when we lived in AZ. It was miserable for everyone, but frequent light mistings, fruits to stay hydrated and daily soaking-wet baths made him more comfortable.

I'm trying to upload a video, but I'm in full paranoid mother mode.

To add, she's been drinking and eating fine, and has been moving around a lot. The only thing is that in the flock, she seems more distant from them. Prior, her and Esther (who is a boy....bad naming by me) were mates, but now he's starting to bond with Ducky. Could it be connected to her becoming depressed or something similar?

EAI,
Until you can get Arrow to a vet, see what you can do to cool her and the other birdies down. 90 heat and humidity could well be the culprit. If a bird is overly hot and having heat stress, you would likely see the panting. Can you get the air temp down with central air or a window unit? Offer baths, showers, or try misting to help lower body temp. Put fresh drinking water in multiple places. You could try a watery treat like cucumber, apple. Please keep a close eye on her and keep us posted.

Thank you so much for the fast reply, I tried looking online but there was nothing that described what was happening. So ofc, my 2nd action was to post here.

I added in an ice cube to all of their water dishes, opened the windows, and started to point a fan on them (low setting) and I'll be running to a grocery store near me to find a water mister thing. And when I come back, I'll make sure to buy some fruits to add in.

My red bellies were panting from the heat today and theyre outside on the lanai. I had to move my lovebirds out of the room they arein to an air conditioned one because the room got so hot ( getting air con installed in that room next week, thank God!) so I'd say it's the heat here today. Ice cubes in water and fine mist with a water bottle. I noticed the breeze picking up a bit now and the red bellies are no longer panting.

Thanks for all the responses! It started to drizzle before I left so I took the birds out for a natural bath :). After misting a few times, she started to act a lot better.

I just haven't had a sick bird in a while so it was definitely an eye-opener

I'm glad to hear that Arrow is acting better now after the natural shower :)! Hopefully the heat is all it was.

I think it was. she's looking 100% fine now...still a bit solitary but she's trying to interact with Kratos :D

My first thought was "OMG NEW CAGE SYNDROME HEAVY METAL POISONING!!!!!" But of course that's because I had that recently with a new cage. Sounds like it was indeed the heat, and it has been hot! My birds seem fine but they have shade and a very nice breeze most of the day.

Oh, for those who don't know, central air is not really a thing here in Hawaii, at least not for most of us, and a lot of the windows (like mine) are a style where a window unit is not possible.

It's actually kind of a make-shift cage while the large aviary one is being shipped in now! I used the large white cage + the other travel cages and connected them together using wire cutters and a filer (I made sure no inside metals were visible by tightly securing sisal rope). It was something I decided out of impulse because I thought it would look cool lol.

Ah man, I wish I had an AC. My room is the hottest out of the entire house because there's only one jalousie. I really want to expand the amount of airflow and light but I had no clue you needed a permit.

We've had to replace our windows, take out the jealousies completely and add new windows that would work with a unit. We're doing the lovebird room next week and we just did the other bird room and bedroom.

No you're right central air is not too common here. Too expensive.

I'm at work right now babysitting (girls currently napping) and its in a newer military house. I'm basking in the central air!

I had a "portable" a/c unit for a room that was added on to my last house and was not part of the ductwork for the central a/c (Southeast Florida). Very good in pinch and it also could be switched to be just a dehumidifier if needed. The unit stands on floor inside room near window and vents out of a tube that gets connected to the window using the simple adjustable hardware that comes with these units. It's great because you can put the tube in the window when you want with little hassle, and so easy to disconnect and put the unit in a closet or corner when not needed. I doubt it is the type of thing a permit would be needed for. They can be had for around $200-ish for a room-sized unit.

Oh my gosh. That's terrible. I don't want to start an unrelated discussion in this thread, but would like to know a little more about the cage metal poisoning, as I just got Cody-Blu a new cage a week ago. I'm going to PM you SilverSage.
