- Keats (budgie) born Feb. 18, 2011, and Raphael (budgie) adopted July 3, 2011. Finn, a Brown-Head Poicephalus, born January 4, 2010, has also joined the family!
Keats and I had our first health scare over the Memorial Day weekend. He got his foot caught in one of his toys (that toy went away very quickly!). Luckily, he's okay
He had a checkup by his vet on Thursday, and there was no evidence of bruising or cuts, and definitely no broken bones. He was very lucky! When the accident happened, he was caught hanging upside down from his toy and then crashed to the bottom of his cage. Birds can easily break a leg this way, and they can also break their necks if they land badly. He seems to be avoiding that side of his cage now, but I'm thankful that he wasn't injured. I hung a new, safer mirror toy for him last night too.
I learned from the vet that, if he had broken his leg, most likely the only treatment for small birds like budgies, canaries, etc. is amputation. I'm so thankful that he still has two legs to stand on
