My lovely little Black Cap Conure, Lucy (in the sky with diamonds) <3
SO! I'm researching for my new birdie and I'm finding plenty of sites selling them, but not many with reviews! What're your opinions and suggestions on flight suits and birdie harnesses?

My conure will be traveling via bike to and from work with me so I'd love some feedback on what you all think about them! :rainbow1:

Your work allows you to bring your bird along? I would love that >.<!

I've never had one personally but about half my family is a vet and most of them told me that if I was to ever get a flight suit that you be sure you have the right size and never to force it on your bird.

I think my uncle(A vet again) had a bird come in with a broken wing because the owner put the suit on wrong.

I don't know any specific brands but just be careful and know that your bird may or may not like it at all.

Yeah, I've read a few things about sizing and basics with training. I wanna get an owner's opinion on it too, to go along with the info to see if it's really worth it :) I work for the the University I attend in my department and my department is so totally awesome. My bearded dragons live in my boss's office actually! haha she has one that I gave her at her house too :) everyone loves them. She fosters little kitties from the local shelter and loves animals too. She's super excited about me getting a bird. We're both kind of nervous about it cause of their beaks, I'm afraid to go into the Macaw/Parrot room at one of the exotic stores up here because of their sheer size. I figure the best way to get used to something is to try it! :)

Lucky you! I might have to convince my boss to let me bring my bird to my camp counsoling job :P!

I'll ask a friend in school tomorrow, he has a B&G Macaw that he uses a flight harness with so I'll get him to type something up.

I am also in the market for a good harness. This is what I have been looking into:

The Aviator Harness The Parrot University

I have read several reviews and they all seem good.

EDIT// you can find it cheaper on amazon.com but I do not think you can order specific colors.

I'd been looking at the ones from pampered peeps. they're good quality, which is totally worth the money for a beloved pet :) I just wanna know how often they need changing (approximately) and any pros and cons and ultimately if they recommend it :)

That'd be super helpful! :D thanks!

Edit: oh and there's no convincing my boss. it's more like
Jen: "when you get it, you're totally gonna bring it to the office right?"
Me: "yeah"
Jen:"SWEET!"

I have a few in diffrent colors but I only buy them from avianfashions.com
They have a chart that tells you size by bird type. Also don't buy there flight liners, they are just makeup pads. Buy them in CVS or any pharmacy, that's what I do and they're thicker then the ones they sell. The aviator harness is diffrent that's if you want to let your bird flyaround outside, there good for outdoor training. The flightsuit is a must have but it will take a while for the bird to get use to.

LOL wait 'til Jen hears a conure at full voice! :)

One thing I have to add... flight suit or not, taking a bird on a bike is dangerous... think about it- the bird gets excited, or startled, or whatever and tries to fly. The harness holds it back, or maybe a wing gets caught up in the string.. down to the ground it goes... you are moving at 10, 15, 20mph, the string gets caught in the wheel or pedals... and drags the bird into the chain or under a wheel. It happens in an instant, and you've lost your bird.

I think you'd be MUCH safer buying a small cat carrier or something and keeping it safely locked inside during the trip.

oh yes for sure! I won't be riding my bike with birdie on my shoulder. I'm working on modifying a soft cat carrier (that i used for my bearded dragons! lol) so that it can easily mount to my bike handles like a basket :) I've seen things like "pet cups" that you can put a small dog in and zip it up with ventilation and stuff like that so I'm working on making one for significantly less ;) I want a harness/flight suit so when i get to the office, my little birdie buddy can sit with me while i work and i can take him around the building without fear of him "escaping" into the press room (the door is always shut but rather safe than sorry) and to keep people that might be afraid of the lil' conure more comfortable :) thanks for the input though!! I really appreciate it! I have a feeling both Jen and I are going to have a little too much fun, especially if lil' conure buddy learns to imitate trudy, our department's resident little old lady haha :p

Friend said he really enjoys his flight suit but finds that his B&G can chew up the thing and thinks of it more as a chew toy than anything else.
He said it a fight to get it on a lot of the time but when it is on that the bird and him enjoy the walks(he's never tried a bike before).

He strongly suggest a diaper though, flying poop is never fun.
Also since he said a conure is fairly small that to be aware of the skies(depending on where you live) as he's heard of hawks taking small dogs so what stopping them from taking a small bird.

Lastly, he said that it about a 50/50 chance, he's had birds that loved the suit, some that never had a preferance, and other that would rather eat their own foot off than put it on.

Thanks! That's really helpful actually lol I'm going to ask the people at the shop if I go ahead and make my payment on the bird and buy a flight suit from them (they carry them in stock :) ) will they help get the training for it started :) They have one male that's about 2 years old i think and then they have itty bitty babies that will be ready at the end of the summer <3 Not sure which we're gonna go with yet :) I'm super excited though! haha:D

I have a flight suit for Oscar (he is a black capped too). He tolerates it so it is WONDERFUL for when he is going places where he might be caught off gaurd. He will have an accident when he is nervous, but otherwise he will not go potty on us anymore. I have been potty training him and he goes on command now. It is to great! You should try it with your new baby too :-)

So glad you are putting so much thought into this....here is where I posted my opinion about the flight suits and the company I go with....seems like the topic has been coming up a lot lately....
Flight suit/diaper...

Also, I always took my caique for bike rides at the campground we stayed at... he loved it...he sat on my shoulder....but I took precautions to make it as safe as I could...for example,,,i put the leash down the neck of my shirt and over to the other side of my body where it came out the bottom of my shirt and I could hang on to it with my hand....Leroy just cuddled against my neck...but, that is not like riding a bike to work either...it was very slow going...the bird would just flip to go for a bike ride, it was always so cute...
I take him to work once in awhile when we have meetings...I am trying to get him a little more socialized.....
