So I fried up some flounder for my parrots in red palm oil this morning. My conures are staring at it as if it were going to jump out, and get them. My macaw looked at it, and decided chewing up some perches is more appealing. My Ekkie ate the entire thing within minutes!!! It’s so interesting to me how these parrots eat so differently. Here’s a photo of Nico with a flounder beak 🄰 No they don’t get this type of ā€œtreatā€ often. Just once in a great while.

Your Ekkie looks like he's enjoying every bite! I've never thought about serving fish.

I don’t give my parrots seafood often. Maybe once every few months. Nico (Ekkie) is the only one who ever eats it. He eats the tail of shrimp first. No idea why. He really enjoys seafood.

Fish is a protein that parrots can digest ( I think). SHellfish, like shrimp, not so sure. I'd be more concerned with how its cooked. Fried anything is not a good idea.

I can understand the concern. Parrot diets are always debatable.

I would be concerned about iodine content of shellfish.
Or maybe I worry too much

Shellfish is low in mercury was my thought, same with flounder and when I googled it it said parrots can have it in moderation. You also have to cook it somehow, and use something that prevents sticking. I automatically thought of red palm oil, or coconut oil. If I baked it I’d have to do the same. I can’t win! I figured as a treat without salt, breading, and such is not a huge deal. One of my parrots really enjoys it.
