What do you all feed your amazons, I was under the impression sunflower seeds were not ideal. But, our pet store has 3 types of parrot food and all have what I think is a lot of sunflower seeds in them.

We got the one they recommended which also has dried fruit in adwell but I'm not convinced its the best mix?

Wow, what a question. The most common diet nowdays ? 50-70% pellets (4-5% crude fat if clipped) (6-10 % crude fat if active, breeding or flighted) the rest is fresh /dehydrated fruit ,veggies, sprouts, etc. Nuts and seeds on a limited bases with clipped birds. Fat is a big deal with zons, they love it and it's bad for them, they don't get much in the wild and so crave it. The excess fat will destroy their liver later in their short life. Most seeds and nuts have way too much fat for the amount of nutrition they provide. The feed your using should have a analysis on the label, check and see what % crude fat your serving. Variety is the secret , too much of anything is bad.

I buy the prepacked mix for Amazons! This dosent have many sunflower seeds in it... I also buy different types of pellets and mix together.. I also buy the Tidymix dried chillies which she loves... Make sure you give him plenty of Fruit and Veg as well.

He does get lots of fresh fruit and veg, it's just the main mix I didn't think was right and this pretty much confirms it. I'll post a pic up tomorrow and go on the hunt for a more appropriate mix.

Where do you get it from?

Hey wenz2712, is Codie eating fruit and veggies better now?

I live in the UK too and alot of places sell the mix that you help yourself too which does have alot of sunflower seeds.. this is why I buy the prepacked Amazon mix, it is more expensive, but so much better for them! If you are finding it hard to buy pellets, let me know and I can point you in the right direction as to where to buy them :)

Kazi gets a couple varieties of Nutriberries and fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, and basically a taste of whatever we're eating. I usually put some aside for him before I add salt. I try to make sure he gets lots of vitamin A and enough calcium.

I have sent you a PM to let you know a good place to buy from :)

Trouble is all the ones in our local pet shop, even the pre mix packets had what I thought was to many sunflower seeds.

Sorry but this is not optimal for Amazons. There is a lot of good brands regarding pellets. I use Harrisons, fruit and veg. He also eat pasta, meat, bread...

Going to order some new stuff today, Harrison's has been suggested and tidymix.

For not "waste" the food you have you can use it as " candy" and also mix it in pellets. But dont mix before he is used to pellets.

Maxie eats Oven Fresh Bites, and she loves Nutri Berries. She gets fresh fruits and veggies every day, after she eats the healthy stuff,I will give her a small amount of seeds. I buy the pellets from Amazon.com, its way cheaper then at the petstore.
