Red Bellied Parrot, Bowie; Goffin's Cockatoo, Zazu;
5 beautiful finches
Hi all u 2's out there. I have been on the poicephalus forum about my 1st parrot (of my own) Bowie, the African Red-Belly. I spent this past winter working with 36 parrots, macaws (hence, the Hyacinth in my avatar), conures, etc. and fell in love with just about all of them. Bowie is a hand fed baby that wasn't taking to humans as well as the breeders would have liked, so I took him - like I needed a project:rolleyes:! Anyway, he's coming along pretty nicely, but I find myself craving bird cuddles now - so I am going to foster a goffin's for a nearby rescue!:grey: He's sweet and has pretty good manners - nothing that a little love and a lot of attention won't fix! Apparently he does scream between 7 and 9 PM, so we will work on that. If i wear him out with playtime beforehand, maybe he'll be tired. If not, that's ok since I get up late and have been tucking Bowie in around 8:30ish anyway. A little night playtime isn't a bad thing in our household. He can be seen on Jo Jo the Grey Rescue website, but I will post his "adoption" picture here. His name is "Zazu". I'm also posting a picture of "Sydney" - a Goffin's that I fell in love with this winter and who is a feather plucker - but oh so cute in spite of his baldness!:D

Oh no !!!!! Why did I look at the pictures ? Sigh..........

Don't worry. Only Zazu is up for adoption. In a crazed moment at least you'd only come home with 1 new 'too...:white1:

I have 6 goffins, and they tend to scream a bit after dark... In fact in the book Guide to Companion Parrot Behavior she even mentions that goffins are prone to some screaming after dark. On another note, please refrain from giving the goffin too much love, as they are quite easy to spoil and I deal with a lot of rehabs that people "killed with kindness" so to speak. Rules are so much better than love and play when it comes to developing a well behaved happy 'too. Just my opinion.

Thank you for the advice. What would you consider "too much love"? I hold him and scratch his head for a while (and yes, sometimes he gets a kiss) and sit with him while he's out (1/2 hour or so). He has an "outside the cage" perch with food dishes and I added a toy to it - and I put a chair right next to it, so he will be eating a little and then hop onto my shoulder for a while - I put him back on the perch usually when he starts chewing on my jewelry, and he may eat some more, plays with the toy and periodically hops back onto my shoulder...This goes on for a while until I put him into his cage and leave the room. I never go to him while he's screaming - and his screaming is a lot more tolerable than I would have expected! It lasts from about 7:30ish to 9:00 and is a series of loud squawks maybe 10 minutes apart. I have heard they spoil easily before and I want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong. I do hand feed him treats sometimes when he's out. Since he's new, I'm trying to get a feel for his likes and dislikes. Oh, he likes to "taste" me or "beak" me - gently with his beak and I let him. If it starts getting a little harder, I say "no bite" quietly and start doing something else, like having him step up.

Everything sound pretty good. Basically you just have to remember that he may go to a home where people work during the day, and as long as he entertains himself well for long periods then I'd say you're doing a good job! Enjoy him :)

My bird starts sounding off in the evening when he's ready for bed, usually around sunset. As soon as I put him down for the night, curtains closed, heater turned on, good nights said, I close the door and see you in the morning Amigo.

Do you think that the squawking around that time might mean he's ready for bed?

Could be that he's expecting you... or knows to expect you, in the wild they naturally display in the evening. Though I do have a male moluccan who says "go night night" about a half hour before lights out.

My Goffin displays at night as well , I call it "getting his freak on", lol
It only lasts about 5-10 minutes, then all is quiet :)
I really don't even pay attention to it anymore because I'm so used to it , except for watching him sometimes , he is pretty funny when he does it , lol.
Yoshi entertains himself really well , Im so grateful for that !
I made sure he learned to play by himself instead of relying on me when I brought his home. Rosie doesn't scream at all ! I must have the quietest Galah in the world ! Not that I'm complaining :)

I think maybe birds scream at dawn and dusk because they are doing a roll call of sorts to check in with the flock? A "here!" "here!" "here!" type of thing with all of them.

That's my guess too :)

Cameo starts to scream a bit when my wife and I are making dinner 6:00ish until I bring her over so she can see what we are making. She will pick out a veggie or two to eat and have a snack then. After dinner she will get her cuddling on the couch with y wife and I and then I put her down for the night. The only time Cameo will scream is when she doesn`t get her cuddling time or if the lights are still on in the kitchen/dining room where her cage is when I have coveered her up. Turn the lights out and she quiet again.
Cameo screams when she knows I am home and I don`t bring her into my office to play on her play gym. If I am gone during the day she will now be happy just to play in my wifes office. We both work out of our home so it has been convenient.
Cameo has copied our granddaughters (6mos) crying/whining which can get very annoying. But Camoe is such a joy to have around.

Never thought I would hear the name Cameo again.....that was my horse's name :)
Beautiful name for a beautiful bird :)

My amazon whines like a dog, and also moans and groans either because he's mad that I'm playing with another bird, or because he is tired.
