I think my 4 month old Alex is starting to molt. There are little white puffs everywhere and he is looking a little untidy. There is just one thing I'm unsure about... Ever since I've had him, the feathers on the back of his head don't sit flush, and are a little ruffled. I have noticed his skin looks very dry, but I don't get a chance to look close - he is a squirmy little thing! Is this just another part of molting? Or should i take him for a check up?

Thank you! Sorry about the photos, he doesn't keep still.

He may be very itchy and could be scratching his head a lot, have you noticed him scratching?

He does scratch, I wouldn't say it would be excessive, but every time he preens.

Hmmm I am unsure. They do look a little ruffled, it could be a heavy molt, from scratching etc.. Do you notice any pin feathers in the area?

I hope someone else will have some answers for you!

I can't see any pin feathers, but he really doesn't stay still for long! It's just strange that he has just started molting but his feathers have been like that for over a month. Thanks your your help :)

I have heard it's normal for some ringnecks to look like crap when they are molting. Other than giving him extra bathing opportunities, I'd say to just continue monitoring him.

It's normal, alexandrines go through a heavy molt every molt cycle. : )
Alex looked like that last year. : )

Like in the post above, just give him more bathing opportunities. They look very messy. xD

Hi, what was the resolution to this? I know it was a while ago!

This is exactly what my Alexandrine looks like on his head and neck. I'm fairly confident he's moulting, but would be good to hear if this was the case for yours?

A 5 year old post! Dang!!! I hope he has gone thru his moult by now!!
