Gizmo - Male Eclectus Parrot

Pebbles - Female Eclectus Parrot
Gizmo needed to burn off some energy tonight. We play a bit of a game of go back, come here (it's primarily about exercise, but hopefully should he ever get out, there might be a chance of recalling him).

This one was a bit trickier than normal, as he had to fly through a doorway.

Sorry about the poor filming quality, it's not easy to hold a camera, while releasing and then recalling:D

Cheers,

Cameron

That is so precious! You're doing such a good job with gizmo and Maya, Cameron :)

Chris,

Thanks so much, always little things to work on, an the constant concern I might be doing something wrong, but they are both great parrots. These are the first parrots I have owned (my pets have always been dogs), so I am always learning and this forum has been very helpful.

Oh and Pebbles wanted to know who Maya was, but I explained she was another beautiful girl on the forum:D

Sorry Cameron, that was a total mental misfire on my part :headwall:

This is so cool! Thank you for posting! My boy is only 8 weeks and I can't wait until he fledges (famous last words I bet lol), and your video makes me even more excited :D

Hehe, Chris it's fine, I took it as a compliment, Maya, is a beautiful girl.

Oh boy, famous last words is right...lol. I missed the early days with my guys unfortunately (I adopted Gizmo and Pebbles fully grown). I'm sure you have a lot of fun ahead of you.

Cheers,

Cameron

Cameron! I LOVED this video! Gizmo's recall is quite impressive, but the immediacy of his response to your go forth command is even more so. Once they're bonded to you, it's far easier to get them to come to you than to get them to go anywhere else.

As always, Cameron, well done!

Stephen,

Glad you loved it.

He has been cheating a bit with the recall lately (coming back before I call), but I figure given my aim with this exercise I am not so concerned, as long as I keep remembering to call him.

As far as the "go back", well he loves to fly, so I think that's why it is so easy.I do have a handy hint that may help in the beginning, well it depends on how your guys react to movement (as I walk around, Gizmo just sits on my shoulder or arm, but this wouldn't work with Pebbles as she always grips on tighter when we are moving). If you start with your arm outstretched and a bit back, then moving your arm forward as you give the call "Go back". Obviously it's a slow movement, your not trying to flick him off the arm, just get him moving in the right direction and thinking about going. I am not sure if this is considered good "Parrot training technique", but it works, and if anything Gizmo liked it and would often time takeoff at the end of travel.

Like I said though (I am sure you know what I mean), the aim is not to launch your Parrot across the room:D, it's just a slow gently movement forward with the arm.

Cheers,

Cameron

Yeah, a few people I know use that technique to great effect. But I've always had a preference for having them take off without the benefit of even the gentle toss. Nothing wrong with it (when done right), of course. Just my personal quirk.

Jolly's getting there, though. His recall is immediate at about a rate of 98%. His go forth immediacy is closer to 80%. The rest of the time I might have to repeat myself a bit.

Those rates are very high, well done, and good on Jolly.

For recall, I know I can get 100% (with peas:D), so if Gizmo ever gets out, I will seriously be grabbing some peas and his glass cup.

Just to clarify though, not a gentle toss:eek:, picture the arm moving at say a slow walk pace (unless I'm just misunderstanding what you mean by toss, I wouldn't like the idea of him having to fly, prepared or not). I would like to think what I was doing at the beginning was more like a ready...set...go, but at the same time something he could and sometimes did back out of by just not taking off. When I mentioned it not being appropriate for Pebbles, it's because Pebbles always holds on when I walk around, so with her, instead of getting ready to fly, she would be thinking oh we are moving, I had better hold on.

Do I sound defensive...lol, we'll probably just misunderstanding what you mean by "toss".

Cheers,

Cameron

No worries, I knew what you meant. I didn't picture you lobbing poor Gizmo across the room. Hahaha!
