Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
BB's diet needs an overhaul..No more "special cockatiel blend"seed from his breeder and a drastic ut-back on the millet.
I could have killed the boy,and not know it. I could not live with myself If I knew I inadvertently caused him to get ill and die.

So his doc said he needs a better diet, but the "bad" food has to be taken away slowly,as not to cause his little body to go into shock.
He was getting a six inch piece of millet every other day,and with his Nupreem fruity pellets he got a quarter cup of tiel mix,but that lasted him two days.

I have lessoned his tiel mix to half of that, and he only gets a thumb sized piece of millet twice a week..No wonder he gained 6g's! He was eating crap
BUT when I check/change his food,it doesn't look like the pellets have been touched. He must be hungry, coz now when I put a plate of "good" things on his roof,he actually has investigated and nibbled on it.
I'm used to Amy the chow hound,HE will sit at his nummy bowl and eat good,,but BB just takes a bite of this and that and I wonder if he is getting enough  But then again,Amy is 5 times larger than Beebs.

So, I will post later on what/how I'm going to do to make my first real batch of chop, for both of them.
Please tiel folks, give me some pointers here!

Jim

Good luck Jim, you are on the right track! Not too familiar with tiel chop, but it should be similar to what Amy eats, perhaps cut smaller?

Half the battle is strategy, urging Beebs to eat the healthy stuff without the distractions of his dry food. It will take time but well worth the effort!

Sending support and hugs Jim, Plum has medical issues and having to severely cut back to keep him on a diet, not easy. The good news is they do adjust to foods you never thought they'd eat in a million years. It is worth remembering that in the wild they are not just handed a plate of food and they maybe should actually be hungry for the next meal? BB will watch you like a hawk so whatever you produce make sure you have the same on your plate, if he wants some OK. Be a late tea for you that day LOL. A healthy diet now can hopefully stop things in its tracks. :-)

Sounds good!! It's a good time to start now in this stage than have a difficult time later with food. And yes, take a photo of Beebs eating his chop too!! Baby gets Worldly Cuisine by Higgins (it has quinoa and sweet potatoes) and surprisingly went to town on in, but there's also wild rice mixes that have veggies in it I could try as well. Trial and error!

Keep us posted.
