Green Cheek Conure
We just got a 10 week old GCC and we are wondering if it is ok to take him places with us. Right now it is winter in Cincinnati, Ohio and the cold concerns use, plus risk of any fumes while traveling by car. But we would really like to take him to visit nearby family and other places etc...

All of my birds have traveled & have ridden in cars, trucks & my van. Some people find their birds get car sick, but that has never been the case with my guys, and a couple of them have been on a trip over 900 miles. Although I don't know for sure, but I mount the travel cage so that the bird(s) can see what is going on...not down in the seat & only see what goes by above.

While I don't take all at the same time, I've not had any problems with them.....just nosy animals where we might be visiting.....got to be careful of someone else's animals.

Also where you're visiting may use candles, air fresheners, teflon coated stoves, pans or other appliances, all potentially deadly to your little GCC.

As long as your car is in good working order, you shouldn't worry too much about traffic fumes.....unless you are driving in heavy traffic areas in China. Pre-heat the car & be prepared to carry your feathered friend inside your coat if you were to break down.

I recently took Chewie, my gcc to see my mum over Christmas :) She enjoyed it so much I was sad to take her back with me, she really loved all the attention from my family and friends and adored my mum! There was lots of squawkings when Chewie couldn't see her!

I'd say Chewie is fine with travelling - I was nervous of her being scared and shouty in the car but she seemed to enjoy all the funny noises and was constantly looking from the corner of her travel cage where she could watch out of the windscreen :)

I'd say take your little guy on lots of adventures, it'll add some excitement. As Weco said, make sure the people you're visiting are aware of the safety measures - houseplants, covering windows etc

Jasmine my GCC comes everywhere - we have a pak o bird carrier which can strap to a car seat belt or use as a rucksack. Jasmine is happiest when she's with us! I attach photo :)

Wow thanks alot. Especailly for the picture of the travel cage. I guess that is next on my shopping list :). Charming is quite fond of us already he wants to be with us all the time. However, I am concerned about his attitude, seems to be a little agressive, nipping at fingers. I have been saying "Ahhh Ahhh"(not real loud) and holding his beak (no pressure at all) with my index finger and thumb, to let him know this is unwanted behavior. However, I am starting to wonder if he likes me holding his beak because he keeps trying to lick my fingers.

We moved from NC to AZ with our cockatiel. She would hang out sometimes on the dash. Without fail she would duck whenever we went under an overpass.

What about taking him outside? Somebody said I should get a leash?

We have a 1 year old Green Check Conure, and over the past 9 months we have spent summer weekends on our boat, drove from NY to Florida and back, went camping, and many other day trips.

We are just always very careful and aware of the surroundings to make sure she is safe. We started doing this with her very young so I feel that she has adapted well to being in different places and being in the car...She is happy as long as she is with us. As it's winter here now, we have not gone out much because it is too cold...

We have the same backpack carrier as JasmineGCC (love it!!) and a few small travel cages that we use on the boat, hotel rooms etc. :)

We have an aviator harness which after 6 months of bribing Jasmine will stick her head through but putting it over her wings - not there yet!! Hopefully by next summer we can take her on the garden in it!!

Re biting - I give jasmine a wobble and a firm 'no biting' and if she continued she goes straight down onto eg the floor and I turn my back and ignore her for a moment. She soon learns - lots of positive praise and treats when she's gentle. I've only once had to cage her when she deliberately bit me hard and 5 minutes later she was cuddly and trying to be gentle. A lot was her being over enthusiastic and some is me not reading her body language - now I can tell what mood she's in and whether she wants to play or a cuddle or to be left alone

Hope this helps
