Green Cheeked Conure for a beginner?

I love our members... what great and thoughtful and caring advice.

I agree with just about everything that has been said, which just goes to show how complicated parrot ownership can be... many legit sides to any question.

I do like the idea of a cockatiel. They're so many more generations into domestication and genetic suitability for first-timers. It's hard to beat a cockatiel, or budgie, for that matter. I know many here (who have big birds, and who are sophisticated parronts) who have fallen head-over-heels in love with a 'tiel! Can I get an AMEN, Jim (AmyMyBluefront)?????
 
I actually have the same one for my Yoda (the version without the playtop). For you I think the playtop would be more useful than it for me, because I expect you'll have his cage in your bedroom, and would often like to have your guy on the playgym there while you are doing stuff in there.

It's a very good quality cage and the perfect size for a conure (IMHO). Good luck!
 
I kind of breezed through this but two things wiseowl5 said I don't agree with....

Conures are very good with kids....I mean I'd make sure they are all bite pressure trained at first, but they generally prefer kids.

Also GCCs are generally very quiet. theres the occasional contact call but if your in another room or at least say upstairs or downstairs you won't be able to hear it. At least not with anything else playing like a TV, They don't call out at night, and mine even lets me sleep during the day. So long as I'm asleep and not doing anything without him he's fine with it. But if I'm up he's on me all the time, so expect that. Conures LOVE attention and will do anything for attention.

They ARE VERY cuddly once you bond. My biggest problem is getting my conure away from my neck because he's so warm and he makes half my neck too hot.....if you don't get this part, ask a husband sleeping next to a wife....
 
Alright. Well, like I said I've never had one. That's just what I picked up from reading on this forum and other places. Thanks for correcting me. :)
 
Cool I wasn't being mean I was just being factual...I throw out advice on other birds too sometimes, but all I've owned are cockatiels and GCC now.

No harm, no foul, and no fowl, (see what I did there?)
 
LOL!! My husband would groan and throw something at you, but I love awful puns! :) You could say I flock to them. :34:
 
Also one more thing....a conure is not a beginner bird and neither is a bugie or cockatiel or etc.


My Clark is not a beginner bird, he is "MY" bird. He puts his head under my earlobe and scratches my neck. He says I love you and kisses me, I say love you and he kisses me. He helps me in the yard, he helps me clean the house, he helps me clean my plate. Conures are not a step up to something else, they are....family.

Also I have been on here almost a year I just found out where the mods hid all the other emoticons.
