Hello friends,
I have a 15 year old African Grey female. For the last five years she has been aggressively plucking one area of her tail. I have taken her to the vet many times and the behavior was always viewed as hormonal. If she scratches herself I put a prescription silvidene cream (SSD) on it and it heals over night it seems. Last week I took her to the vet for a beak trim and now I’m being told they need to run 900 dollars worth of tests. This includes X-rays and various blood tests. Why now after five years? If it’s PDD can birds last that long? Does anyone else have birds who do this and have for a long time? She’s beautiful and playful. She has a great appetite and gets tons of exercise (vet told me she’s lean). She’s out of her cage most of the day and gets tons of attention. It’s just this one area of her tail. Money isn’t the issue it’s the stress of putting her through all the testing.
What would you do?
