Guessing Alex gender

Hi Alex expert,

Currently my buddy is 9 months old. I really want to know the gender without going through DNA test. Pls see the attached photos and give your opinions and thought. Any comments are welcome.

Sorry, the attached images didn't show up. I know how you feel, but honestly there's no way aside from DNA to know. At nine months, your Alex is nowhere near sexual maturity. Mine are 14 and 16 months old and I have no clue either, although the previous owner told me they were a DNA sexed pair. I have my doubts, but only time will tell!

I'm guessing your pictures are too large in size - try using Photobucket and then post a link here to the photos on Photobucket. But really, nobody is going to be able to answer your question definitively - only DNA testing can do that.

if you want to know the gender at this moment when your parakeet is just 9 months its impossible go for DNA test.Alaxendrine & also the other ring neck parakeets develop ring when matured.If your bird does not develop any ring after 2.5 years its a female.If it developed then its a male.Before that who claims it male or its female without DNA test its all rubbish.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Determining the difference between a female and male Alexandrine is simply achieved by comparing size, tail length and shape of the head, although surgical sexing is more precise. The male bird colours between the age of 12 to 17 months, when the ring colour is prominent

Well we can narrow it down to either male or female. Sorry couldn't resist

They say that males have slightly flatter heads and females slightly rounder.
Our bird also wasn't DNA tested, our breeder would DNA half and guess the other half.
We had our doubts that it really was a boy, but finally after 2 years, this moult, he has started to get about 3 red feathers at the back and one black feather near his beak

LOL! I have a friend who owns three mature male Alexes (ie. all have their adult rings). The biggest has a rounded head and quite a short tail in proportion to his body. The smallest has a flattened head and an extremely long tail (even longer than the Big Boy's). The middle one has a tail length about equal to his body length and is the dominant bird in the trio. We have discussed at length the different subspecies of Alex and wonder whether my friend might have a Nepalese, a Laotian and/or perhaps an Alex/Ringneck hybrid. Bottom line: no one knows.

The point is, my friend felt certain that by purchasing three birds she would surely end up with a male/female pair based on the head shapes and tail lengths. Nup! Didn't happen!

DNA really is the only way to tell for sure.

I know there is no comparing, and nothing is conclusive without DNA or waiting for another year but our Diesel is just a couple of months older (ours is around 1 year old) and he seems to have a flatter head, and already has markings coming through. Just maybe, yours is a wee girl?

Well I will say that regardless of whether it is a female or a male, it is a beautiful bird and looks so healthy.

Diesel your bird is so beautiful my friend.A nice green sheen, long body & a very good red patch on the shoulder.You know many people call this bird Wazire Toti here.Wazir means minister & Toti means parrot.Ha ha cause the shoulders are red patched.So the better the red patch nicer is the bird cause Red shoulder patch is the trade mark of Alex.

Disel if your bird is one years old i think its a male without the red ring.Look at the color on the fore head.Females lack this color sheen.Males not that they get the red ring but also have some difference in the colors.The green shades even have some variations.
