Peter is striking quite the pose there, Hannah! All your birdos, and Mary, are quite gorgeous :)

Been a while since I’ve posted on here. All the birds are happy and well, a few are moulting ready for winter feathers I guess?
Wondering what winter will be like on our new property, hope the aviary isn’t too exposed to the cold. Will have to keep a close eye.
Some of you may have seen my other thread a couple of weeks back. This is the new addition, Wolfie.

Welcome back Hannah, Wolfie is a beauty!!

Do you have an option for portable heater if needed? Electric oil-filled radiators among the best solutions!

Hi Scott!
Sounds like a great idea, are they completely safe? Have you used one?
My friend had a ‘heat’ lamp in her chicken coop last year.. it caught on fire in the night, burnt down the coops and killed all her chooks. Devastating! So now I’m paranoid about using similar things!

The portable Radiator that Scott recommended is the safest portable style Heater on the market as the exterior never gets hot enough to start a fire. The only concern is that with age, the heat controller can fail, but they tend to fail to an off-position. Like all portable Heaters, they require normal checking to verify that all is working well.

Heat Lambs have a long history of such deadly failures and should be avoided.

Commonly safe guard with portable heathers is to never locate them next to flammable stuff.

I have indeed, Hannah with perfect safety! As Steven/Sailboat and Flboy suggested, electrics are potential weak spot to be monitored. The oil-filled chambers are sealed and radiated heat among the cleanest possible. Many brands, sizes, and levels of output available!!

Thanks everyone for the advice on the heater!

Little Wolfie has been making progress over the past couple of days!
I’ve been opening his cage and he’s slowly been gaining confidence, poking his head out further each day. Then yesterday he took the plunge and flew out! I was a bit nervous as I have many large clear windows in the lounge room with no curtains, I didn’t want him to hurt himself but luckily because he was unsure and just looking for somewhere to land he only gently booped into one window and then found the top of his cage to sit on. I gave him some millet and left him to observe the new world. After an hour I decided to try and put him away but he has ‘hand’ issues which made it quite difficult.. He will not let me touch him with my hands. I can however put my face right into his and he loves it! I can even stroke him with my nose :ROFLMAO:
So I ended up encouraging him to fly off the cage until he landed on my head, after a few attempts I could lower my head next to his doorway and he went back in, woohoo!
We did the same today, but with better success. As I sat next to the cage on a chair and he chose to fly down from the top of the cage to sit on the back of the chair with me. We sat there for half an hour or so while he preened himself, So sweet! He sat on my shoulder a bit too before putting back in the cage with my head again. Oh He also preened my hair and my eyelids like sunny use to do!
So pleased!
Here are some photos,
Please excuse the mess I look, and the fact I’m in pyjamas.. I have covid so what’s the point in getting dressed lol!

Nothing to excuse, Hannah, you look beautiful and little Wolfie, oh he just looks so sweet! Few things nicer in my opinion than when a little birdie trusts us enough to sit close and have a good old preen, and when they preen us too. Wonderful progress report Hannah, and I wish you a very speedy recovery from COVID as well 🙏❤️

Hello!
The outside birdos are all coping well with the winter so far, no cause for concern as of yet. They are quite well acclimatised. Budgies are funny, the swap and change who they are best friends on a weekly basis. Cosmo and Sprinkles seem to have buddied up this week. The two ‘Tiels, Percy and Gizmo are grumpy and happy together as always lol. They keep watch for any danger, and let the care-free budgies know.
Wolfie, my inside ‘Tiel is doing well too. I let him out a few times a week. He hit a window quite hard a few weeks ago but was fine thankfully, he hasn’t done that since!
He did however present to me this morning with a bloody wing. No idea what he’s done, it’s right on the edge. Looks sore and can see the skin which is quite bloody. Unfortunately I saw it just as I was about the leave for work, He was happy and chipper in himself so decided to take a look at it when I got home. Which I’ve just done. He still HATES hands so had to catch him with a towel, was really difficult to see the injured area as it had dried and he was squirming about. Decided to just leave it, it’s no longer bleeding and he is acting fine and also happy preening it, and hasn’t hindered his flying. I’ll keep a close eye on it for infection or problems of course.
Other than that, no dramas :D

Your flock is looking mighty fine, Hannah! Glad they're adjusting to cooler temps too :)

Awwww, poor little Wolfie! I hope his wound heals up cleanly, the poor guy. You can try applying the juice from a freshly cut aloe vera plant if you have any growing, or even use a product like "Medi-Honey" that may help keep it clean and clear it up...

It's a bit sticky so try to keep it off his feathers, which might of course be easier said than done!

Wolfie is as cute as ever.
He’s doing well at coming out his cage occasionally, he’s bumped into the windows a few times now that he now knows they’re there!
His wing healed up fine after than random injury he gave himself.
He still hates hands touching him, I tricked him into letting me scritch his pin feathers on his head the other day. He doesn’t mind my face being right in his face so I started scratching him using my nose (LOL) and then I worked my hand up to my face and started using my fingers instead of my nose and he didn’t notice..woohoo..haha. Silly boy.
