Hi all,

I have a 3 month old Conure who loves sleeping in (and on top of) his happy hut similar to the picture I attached.

I've heard of horror stories of conures getting stuck in the thread of these huts and chewing off their leg or wings to get loose. I read about the dangers only after I've introduced him to it. I know how important the hut is for my conure's sleep. Plus I can't imagine him trying to sleep on his perch all 10 hours and feel comfortable (he is clumsy and would slip off sometimes).

Are there any safer alternatives to the happy hut? Either store bought or made? I was thinking something made of materials similar to the nests they'd have in the wilds. I need some advice please! Thank you in advance!

Great! I like how it has a double purpose (for over pluckers) and safer than the happy hut. I assume its safer because its fleece has no strings?

Thanks for the suggestion, Rio Mom. I'm seriously considering it. Anyone else with more alternatives?

I've never heard of those stories, but I know several people who use them.

Alternatives that I know of that aren't just cuddle things that attach to the sides/corners, is something circular with one opening. I'm on my phone or I'd attach pictures. It could work, but it's not as "fluffy".

Katherine, something like a nest box? I've considered those too. Maybe I can put warm bedding material inside.

I probably wouldn't use a nest box, it could encourage breeding/hormonal behavior.

I was lucky that a nest box did not cause the conures I used to have to be hormonal nor in breeding behavior. They sleep in there and were quite happy, matter of fact my best friend still uses it, it was a nest box that we built for them.

As long as you check your Happy Hut for any loose strings there shouldn't be any problems. I have one in my inside and outside cage, and have never seen any strings in the year that I had them both.

I also check them every few weeks or so.

Thanks for the links, Katherine and thank you all for the responses and suggestions. I think I'm leaning more towards the flannel tube that Rio Mom suggested or something similar.

Me and my partner are going to a petshop this weekend so I'll see if there is something similar there. If not, I will place the order. If anyone has any more suggestions for happy hut alternatives, keep them coming!

what about this? was thinking of getting one for Cloud..

My gcc loves sleeping in her Jolly Ball. I bought her's made and all decorated by Iggy's Bird Rescue and Toys. I will buy from her again because she did a great job on a custom order.

Joeyx: that's kind if what I have for our conure right now. It has the potential to unravel which poses danger to birds if they get caught in the loose threads (at least from what I read) so I'm looking for a safer alternative. :)

Conuregirl: I like that jolly ball! Not as comfy as the happy hut but I can probably put flannel inside. Only concerned about the size, it might take up too much space in the cage. The 8"might work though.

Thank you very much, I will look out for something similar at the pet ship or order if I don't find any. I'd love to hear more suggestions!

lol i'm having second thoughts now. ;[
my main concern with it is if Cloud would chew on the black hangers, rendering it un-
hangable. it happened with an older lovebird of mine with her happy hut. -.-

Some people say the snuggle / happy hut is ok as long as you watch out for loose threads. For my own peace of mind though, I would prefer something with no thread, in case he chews on the material for the 8 hours that I'm at work.

As for chewing the hanger, I guess it's inevitable unless you can find one with safe metal links? Idk :/

Boom, I hang the Jolly Ball over my bird cage with a toy hook. It is her favorite spot to hang out and sleep. My conure never explores the home or leaves her cage when I am out of the house. I leave her cage open most of the day and sometimes when I am gone. It is
like a playgym and sleeping hut for her. I have to clean the inside because she always eats in there lol.

If you can afford to spend the money, this is the BOMB! Molly loves to run in and out and do summersaults inside of it. She literally ran into it the moment I put it into the cage.

BTW, I got the medium for my GCC. I could go on and on about how happy I am with it. I'm going to order one for Cody's cage now.

How much do they run? I like the fact that it's hard mounted, I'm wondering if the swinging of the happy hut is what's preventing Loki from going in his.

I get my bird tents from Annrose at QUALITY BIRD TENTS. They are WONDERFUL! She also custom make them by the size and material you would like. Very safe!

The one and only time I have ever seen a thread was when I first got my first Happy Hut, I snipped it out and never had any problems. Maxx doesen't pick at it at all.
