I was reading through some threads and felt this would be a great site for me. I have a Blue and Gold born in 1995. She was rehomed 3 times in 1 month in 2008 (turned out she is a biter and no one wanted to admit it but I'll give a quick rundown of incidents later). Before I accepted her I went to an avian vet to ask questions and get a better idea of what the responsibilities would be.
We took her in and would never give her away! She is small for a blue and gold and they say she is relatively quiet. She came with a bucket of seeds but those went out to the wild birds because she instantly took to the pellets. Fruits and vegetables were the challenge and still are but we have a pretty steady food routine that keeps her interested in fresh foods while getting her main nutrition from pellets.
She was my bird until she started feeling sexy then she switched over to my male friend and they are permanently bonded. She has laid dozens of eggs but they were sporadic. Last year she started dropping an egg every 2 weeks which included fairy eggs and the last one was a double shell egg. We put her on the medicine that stops hormones. She now gets an implant and we will see how long it lasts. Right now we are at 6 months in early summer and not a single wiggle. We are having a great sigh of relief.
She showed she was a biter about a month in and she has even surprised the avian vets. I had stitches the last time. I have scars on my hands, she has gotten me in the arm a couple of times and I have a hole in the cartilage of one of my ears. She pinches my friend once in awhile but has bitten him severely once. (that is a story for another time) She gets put in her cage awhile or she gets put to bed early if she pinches or bites. A while means a few hours, not days.
She is relatively healthy. She has had 2 emergency visits but overall she is a good girl. She doesn't talk much but she has a warning scream that has almost dropped up to the floor.
There you have it!
