Hello from babs

My parrot is a blue fronted Amazon. She is in her late 50's, I have had her for 25 years. She belonged to my Mother before me. She has been falling lately, I'm a bit concerned. Looking for information on senior Amazons.

Welcome. At 50 your birdie is one of the older ones on here. As a safety measure, I'd out a nice soft towel on the bottom of her cage, to soften up any falls. That's all I got, my boy is less then a year old. Good luck.

Hello and Welcome! I'm sorry your BFA is falling. There are numerous possible causes, it may well be due to age and arthritis but balance issues could also be symptoms of neurological disorders or a variety of other serious illnesses. If she hasn't had a thorough exam and blood panels by an avian certified vet you would be well advised to take her in. I hope it's nothing too serious, hopefully she will recover quickly. Please keep us updated.

Hello Babs I cant help you as I have no experience of an aging Amazon but I would suggest perhaps your nearest Avian Vet might be able to help and also I would suggest putting her on a low perch and placing things like her food and drink bowls and toys within easy reach of her but other than that I will leave the replies to those who know better than me. There are lots of Amazon people here so you will get lots of helpful tips and advice. Welcome to you and your Amazon girl...whats her name

Welcome to the forum! Your Amazon has great longevity, so you are doing many things correctly! As Allee suggested, having a vet consultation may prove very helpful. Perhaps this is nothing more than aging, and positioning perches, toys, and feeding/water dishes to a more comfortable position will make a difference. Reorganizing so the occupied space in the cage is less "vertical" will lessen the severity of fall and potential for injury.

Good luck to you both, and hopefully more members with similar situations will contribute ideas.
