My new addition.

Feather in Portuguese is pluma or pena. Pluma also means feather in Spanish. I had to look up “Bagwis” as I have never come across that word. It the name of a Filipino comics character and subsequent movie. 😜

I wish there were bird fairs in my part of the state. It would be interesting to see all the different birds and maybe pick up some new chew toys.

Enjoy your new beauty!
OOOops! SOrry about the misinformation! I was repeating what I was told, LOL.

And I agree! I wish there was a bird fair, too, where I lived!!

I got him to step up today.
He seemed like he wanted out he was kind of climbing all over so I opened it up.
He sat on the door for a while and then crawled around the outside (see picture).
Eventually he ended up back on the door and not to sure how to climb back in.
He stepped up on my hand somewhat reluctantly so I could help him back.

He’s a real eating machine.
Loves his veggies and most fruit I have tried.
He’s slow to eat the pellet/ seed mix I use.
I don’t want to have to resort to sunflower seeds.

Because of his looks I keep thinking of him as Bingo’s Mini-me. This picture of him hides all his red markings and he could very well be a small yellow nape.

I kinda agree that Nugget brings to mind KFC. Unfortunately Cheddar brings up pictures of SpongeBob. So why not Bob, gender neutral. Bobby male, Bobbye or Bobbie female. Isn't picking out names fun! I am jealous of your cutie.

Worse than KFC, Nugget reminds me of McDonalds and wondering what part of the chicken is the "nugget". I've never been a fan of chicken nuggets from McDonalds- theyre too uniform looking to be anything but a lot of artificial. Now, Chik-fil-a is different. Their chicken, including their "nuggets", is pretty good, if a bit Salty.

How about a Mexican place name like Cabo or Baja? I have a budgie named Baja but he's named after a speedboat.

We have a problem.
This morning Merlin started fighting with Luna.

I changed out the papers in the Twins cage and that means I have to basically let them out.
There was a lot of communication between Cheddar and Merlin. A lot of eye pinning or flashing. Tail fanning and small noises.
When flying around the noise was tremendous.
When I put them back they started fighting.
Can’t really be sure who started it, it was to fast.
No damage or injuries and I quickly converted their combined cage into two separate cages.

This was not what I was expecting.

I had something similar happen between Pacho and Plumas. After holding and scratching Pacho when I put her back in the cage with Plumas he would lunge at Pacho as if he was upset because she allowed me to give her attention.

I think things will calm down.

Dang, sorry. Sounds like some jealousy. Particularly since you know that Merlin isn’t “interested” in Luna, him paying some attention to the new baby could definitely cause some tension. I hope things calm down for you.

I was wondering how the three of them would interact.
Well this is only the second day with him not counting the day I got him.

I am hoping that Merlin/Luna relationship won’t be damaged. Luna tends to be a drama queen. You touch her when she’s not expecting it and she screams like…like she’s being vivisected . So the fight I saw this morning might not have been a big deal.
But I don’t want to take a bird to the vet with a damaged eye or bitten toe.

I’ve seen videos of macaw pairs ….squabbling and they look quite dangerous to me yet the birds are supposed to be a bonded pair.

So I am erring on the side of caution. This evening will see how they do with mutual out of cage time.
Hopefully I can put them back together afterwards. Anytime they have a tussle they “make up” by preening each other.
The wildcard is Cheddar. If Merlin spends too much time on his cage or trying to reach him all may not be forgiven.

It’s a work in progress.
Stay tuned for future developments.
I have a short video of Cheddar playing with a toy I may upload.

Keep us informed. I like to hear how others deal with their companion avians.

The Twins spent the night together like normal after evening flights…
This morning Merlin became aggressive towards Luna.
He didn’t want her close by. Normally they groom each other .
I opened up the other side of the cage so Luna has a place to get away from Merlin when she needs to.

Cheddar started playing with his toys early this morning before sun up. Eat breakfast. He’s taking an early morning nap 💤 at the moment.

I have the feeling he’s older than I was told but his age isn’t so important.

I have the feeling he’ knows how to fly but simply can’t because his wings are clipped.
His tail doesn’t resemble a months old bird.

Will see what happens when hormone season starts around April..

Hey there! I send a direct message with some info on green-cheeked amazons.

Just a little update on Cheddar.
Eating a lot.
Climbing all over and upside down inside his cage.
Playing with and sometimes hanging from his toys.

He very much wants to be part of the amazon flock..
In the evening he really wants to “roost “ with the Twins.

I have allowed some closely supervised out of cage time for them. Merlin gets right there up close and personal. Cheddar did a little grooming on Merlin’s leg feathers.
There was some toe biting (gentle I think) and some beak on beak contact (gentle I hope).
A lot of Grrrrrr Grrrrr ing with pinning eyes and some tail flaring.
No aggression just gentle exploration.

The trouble is Luna.
She doesn’t seem upset by/with Cheddar just curious but.
The budding relationship between Cheddar/Merlin is causing Merlin to reject Luna .
He pushes her away sometimes a little aggressively.
Luna can always retreat to the small portion of the cage.

And the age question is constantly on my mind.
Is he as old as his coloration would indicate or is he young as his behavior Leeds me to believe?
I keep telling myself I’ll know more in April when The Twins hit hormone season.

Here is a pic of Cheddar on the right and Merlin to the left of him.

yay! Congratulations on the new baby!! He is stunning!

I need to do an update but not sure where to start.

It looks like Merlin is falling hard for Cheddar.

Out of cage time has completely collapsed. When I let the Twins out Luna is happy to fly around but she doesn’t go far because of Merlin.
Merlin goes strait to Cheddar’s cage and just wants to get to him. At first it’s completely friendly but he gets frustrated and aggressive the longer he can’t get to him.
Luna wants Merlin with her and when she tries to get close to Merlin he chases her away.

So I have let Cheddar out at the same time while staying within arms reach just in case.
Their interaction has seemed friendly except……
Merlin gets almost as defensive towards me Ashe does towards Luna and he could lash out at Cheddar in place of me.

What’s the saying about the observer affects the experiment.

I have a short video of their interaction, a bit too short as it turns out.
Merlin started regurgitating and trying to feed Cheddar right after I shut down.
Merlin has never done that to Luna.

It looks like a Love Connection to me! Surely not what you had in mind when you adopted Cheddar, who seems to be older than you were told. Poor Luna. Are you sure Cheddar is a male?

No I’m not sure.
I find myself thinking of Cheddar as She/her all the time.
Don’t know if it’s unconscious thing or because he’s smaller.
I asked the breeder what gender twice but don’t remember the answer.
My son was right there and he doesn’t remember either.

I know someone turned Cheddar”s play control up to 11.
Merlin was playful when I first got him but it was different. He was always jabbing toys with his beak like beak boxing.
Cheddar climbes and hangs. And chews up wood like a wood chipper. Cheddar is…… gosh I don’t know how to explain.

When Bingo would hang from his toys and play it was like the toy did him a personal injury, he wanted to kill it.
Cheddar doesn’t play with that kind of attitude and doesn’t scream when playing (saves screams for her undivided attention).

You should get Cheddar sexed to be sure. It's no fun to have birds wanting to breed all the time but that's nature for you. Healthy happy animals, birds included, will eventually want to make more. We neuter or spay dogs, cats, horses, etc. Pet ferrets are also neutered. Other furry pets like rabbits, hamsters, and other rodents must be segregated by sex. But we can't surgically neuter our birds. I'm so frustrated by my budgie Joey's hormonal behavior. She laid another egg yesterday.

Cheddar is making a strange noise.
It reminds me of a puppy whining.
Wondering if anyone else has a bird with a noise like this.

Maybe he's channelling my princess parrot, Peachie. She makes a whiny/crying sound like that if/when I have to cage her while I do the housework, it breaks my heart and she knows it!!

Are you sure it's not a dog or puppy? Something heard from outside or TV? I enjoy trying to figure out and identify sounds.
