Green Cheek Conure
Hi all, I am Vicky and my bird is Bert. He is a 3 month old green cheek conure. We've only been "together" for about 10 days but everything is going great so far! He's a little nippy but I understand I need to work more with him and it will probably go away as he gets older. He seems to trust me, just seems to want to let me know he is boss and I want him to know I AM BOSS! LOL

He eats well, poops well and plays well. I work at home most of the time so he has plenty of one on one time with me as well as my husband....and we keep the door to his cage open most of the day so he can climb around the outside of his cage and/or come to us as he wishes.

I live in middle TN. Anyone else near Nashville? :green2:

Hello, and welcome!
Bert sounds adorable... pictures, please???????????
I love Green Cheeks... they're just the perfect little handful, aren't they?

Here are a couple pics of my little guy. The "big guy" with the hair is my husband :D the other pic is Bert with my OTHER favorite guy... my grandson Gavin. It was the first time Gavin ever held a bird. He was awestruck. :)

Thank you all! I of course think he is adorable :green2:

Yes, he is clipped. I bought him 19 days ago and he was already clipped but I don't necessarily have an objection to it because he flies around the house or at least from one place to another without landing on the floor with no problem. I know there are two sides of thought on clipping and I hope we don't get ostracized for clipped wings.

He is so darn cute! Welcome to you and Bert.

I believe that clipping of wings is totally situation-dependant and a personal choice - this forum seems to be pretty respectful about that.... Happy and healthy feathered kids are the most important thing :)

welcome to you both!

People here are more understanding of clipping than many places, all we really care for is the benefit of the bird. If you see how he does when he replaces his flight feathers you can see how he does then.

Just remember even when clipped if he gets outside he can and most likely will fly off!

Hi and welcome.

Clipping : As said we are respectful of that as long as it is done properly and the bird does not end up being butchered by someone who is untrained and ignorant. Just because someone says they can do it for you does not necessarily mean they should. Check first folks please?

Bert looks like he has definitely settled in. Love the pics, thanks

Welcome to the forums, Vicky and Bert! We love pics, thanks for sharing!

Clipping is a divisive issue and is freely discussed in respectful manner. What matters most is you have made an informed decision keeping the safety and well being of Bert as first priority.

Good rule of thimb they should stick out a bit but not to much.

See picture, they need to be able to climb a bit but not to much and then drift back to earth.

Also I just figured out how to thumbnail so bird kiss!!!

I totally understand when birds need to be clipped for their own safety... but it always makes me sad to see a bird, a creature meant to fly, have that taken away from them. But good to know he can still fly :) I would encourage you though, if it's not a safety concern, to let the feathers grow back so he can fly with full strength. I say, if the bird can safely fly inside your house, with supervision of course, then that's always best for the bird. But if people are constantly coming and going and doors are left open, either make changes or it's probably better to clip. But, if someone is thinking of getting a bird and knows they will have to clip to keep their bird safe, I would respectfully tell them that maybe a bird isn't the right pet for them because, why get a flying animal when you don't want it to fly? Why not just get a dog? I personally would never want a flightless bird as a pet. I admire the beauty of their flight, embrace them as creatures of the air, and I wouldn't want it any other way. But it's really your decision on whether or not you clip, but if it's for any other reason than the bird's safety, I really don't think it's the right thing to do.
Here's an article about the importance of flight:
