African grey (joe)
Hello all im looking for some tips and info people may share with me :) my African grey joe is probably about 10 years old, he was my mothers but he took a shining to me and no one else so as time went he became mine and i love him :) he also loves me he actually performs mating calls to me( im unsure if this is normal it makes him very hard to train because he won't eat any treats because he instantly just sings his mating call) i managed to get him onto my shoulder and arm but he's still reluctant to do so, id like him to be listen more andto know if he will ever take treats instead of just do his call :( thank you everyone! :)

Id like to add that me and Joe have a good relationship he choose me over a house of 5 i can stroke him kiss him he's always been abit weary of hands, he never bites me he only holds my fingers with his beak and licks? Im just baffeled on more training as he just won't take treats he literally just does his mating call noises and regurgatates for me haha .

Thank you :) he's defiantly a mischief haha :)

There are many African Grey guardians here, and lots of good advice & information. Go up top to "Forums", click on "Congo & Timheh Greys", and read, read, read! Joe has chosen you as his guardian. Find out all you can, and you'll both be happy for many years to come. Welcome to our forum, and good luck with Joe!

When Joe begins performing his mating calls, do not ignore him. In my opinion he is trying to communicate with you. Keep talking to him constantly, repeating certain saying and words. This could take a long time but be patient. He will soon realize you are ignoring his callings. Remember African Greys love to communicate, soon he will give up on the mating calls and try communicate with you through words.

A bit if advise, rather not let Joe sit on your shoulder. All birds are very unpredictable, biting when you least expect them to.

Thank you antoinette uhm he's probably done mating calls to me for years now i never ignore him also he never stops his call when im around :P and he won't take treats just drops them he only wants my finger or a scratch on the neck! Maybe I'll try loads of random fruit & veggies see if he's more interested with something new :) what does your grey love?

Joe sounds like he is in love. :) My Grey is hard to train, too, because he's constantly trying to FEED me and isn't in the mood to accept treats. I'd almost rather have your calling issue than the constant head bobbing and beak full of goo. See, it could be worse. :)

What I do on days I'm going to train my Grey is just give him his standard diet and not the "extras" he enjoys on any other day. All the things he eats first out of his bowl, I know are his favs, so I just use those to train him with later in the morning. By then, I have his full attention. Good luck with your boy!

Joe defiantly trys to feed me aswell he just loves to try and feed me an old seed! How do you find away around this and training? :)

Try eating the treat first yourself, he will notice how much you are enjoying it. Then offer it to Joe again. That is how I got Mishka to eat pellets LoL (the pellets are YUCK)
Have you tried plain popcorn?, most birds love it.
I am fortunate Mishka will eat practically anything I offer him, BUT I have to first eat it in front of him first.

Mishka loves talking and talking and talking, his favourite pass time. Early in the morning, we chat. He sits and chats to himself for hours thereafter, going over all the words and phases he has been taught. He cleverly adds words making up his own sentences.
