Just wanted to say hello.. new member here. We have a cockatiel already and just brought home another new addition to our family. We stopped at a local pet shop last week looking for play gyms and saw a green cheek conure sitting in a pen, bopping up and down, trying very hard to get our attention. Looking at his food (they were feeding him cockatiel food.. sunflower seeds galore) a few plastic perches with only 2 plastic rings as toys.. my husband and I both left the store with heavy hearts. Needless to say we decided to go back and 'rescue' this little guy from the pet shop. After numerous questions about his age/health, etc.. they told us he was 2 years old and has been the vet twice. We were suckered in even more when he again starting his little bopping up and down and squeaking something out sounding much like a low pitched 'ribbit!"

We are taking him into the vet tomorrow to be checked, hoping everything is ok. He seems healthy but with the surroundings he was in, I want to make sure he's ok and take care of anything that might be a problem early on.

Our cockatiel is a bit upset with us at the moment, as we moved him into our bedroom for the quarantine period. Hoping he realizes we aren't abandoning him, just trying to keep him safe. Trying to split time between the two birds in different rooms is a bit tiring, but want the best for the birds.

Doing as much reading up as I can to learn more about this little guy... if anyone can recommend any must reads, be it websites or books, I would greatly appreciate it!

I have already put some toys in his cage, a lava block, mineral block, cuttlebone, etc.. don't want to overwhelm him yet until he gets used to his new home. I have some coconuts I would eventually like to make into toys for him/her. I call him a him but I really have no clue on the sex :p

Will post pics when I can.

Thanks for reading!

I am a very new member as well, and it's interesting to be involved in the community! There are very little avid parrot owners in my area, so it's great to be able to find out about other's experiences!

Welcome to the forum and you can google information on gcc and information on the gcc as a pet. Also a very good book is called and don't take offence Parrots for Dummies. It covers a wide range of parrots, care feeding, housing, training etc. I got mine from Amazon.com and bought it used it is a really good book and a lot of forum members use it.:)

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone. I picked up the Nook version of the Parrots for Dummies and can say honestly I wish I'd had that before we even got our birds. It's a great read with a lot of useful information so thank you for the recommendation!

Bailey is settling in slowly but surely, with her little personality starting to emerge. I'm learning which foods she prefers, and have found 2 favorites already, raisins and mango. She will nibble on broccoli a bit and has dunked a cube of cooked carrot in her water but decided it wasn't worth the trouble. I'm looking for more recipes so that I can find something I can make and freeze and thaw when needed.

Anyway, thanks again to all. :)

Google bird tricks chop mix :)

There's a blog posting(either the first or second result) with a awesome chop mix recipe. I make 1-3 months worth and freeze it. I thaw it out in the fridge, then take out the portion I need and microwave it for 30-60 seconds until warmed through(to kill any buggers that may have developed) then run a ice cube through it to cool it down again.

Rosie loves it, Kenji is still getting used to it.
