I am setting up for my next feathered critter!
I have always liked the Pionus and since I am an apartment dweller (for the moment) I would think this is the way to go.
I have had a few birds (Cockatiel Parrolett and Budgie) but have been featherless for a few years and thing it is time to pull the plug.
I have been around larger birds for years as friends have many but this will be my first larger bird. I am looking for a Blue Head baby and am looking for any information I can get on them including breeders in the Arizona area and books people think are considered must read.
I am in the market for cages now and am thinking 2, one for sleeping and one for my main room for day time. I tend to not sleep for more than 4 hours at a time so am up a lot at odd hours and that may bother a one cage bird.
Thanks for any information you can throw my way.

Hello. I know this is an older post but id thought id give a response.

Ive only owned my pionus for a couple months so take what i say with a grain of salt. He is only five months old and ever changing.

I live in an apartment and he calls for us whenever we leave the room. Its not too loud. A little annoying, but not enough to get a complaint.

Mine wants to be with in the same exact room with us but is content being on a perch. He loves his head scratched and to be perched on us and loves to snuggle but he is not craving it like a cockatoo.

He loves sleep but gets silly at times too. He likes to be on the floor running back and forth, harrassing the dog, or exploring. He has two personalities. One i call pretty boy pi, because he is sweet and loving. The other is the green goblin and its when he is nuts and silly.

Ive read a couple books but the info is pretty basic. Good luck and keep us posted on your next bird.

Thanks for the response. My apartment is rather small and he will have no trouble staying close. The one thing I am a we bit consered with is I do not sleep for more than 3-4 hours at a time so my schedule is all over the place. I am going to buy 2 cages, one for the bed room for him to sleep and one for main room to hangout in and around during the day. I just worry about wakening the critter when I move here and there. How deeply do these sleep? Is it depending on the bird or?

My bird sleeps heavy. He goes to bed himself around 8-9 and doesnt get up until he is ready. I think the sleeping cage idea is great. He will let you know when he is awake.

Covering the night cage should help in not being too disturbed.
