Help Building My Playpen?

So I've decided to build a play pen on top of my parrot's cage. But there's one problem. I'm not sure what woods I should use, what toys can be harmful to my bird, and if any specific types of everyday metals can be toxic. I know what woods are safe but I'm just stuck on trying to find the "best" kind. Any I know from experience what toys my birds like and hate and also which ones they get caught in. But for future reference I would like to know more about what materials I should use in general. Thank you
