Hello. I woke up this morning to find my six month old female Raja sleeping on the bottom of the cage. I picked her up and put her on my chest and she stayed calm but awake. I offered her millet and she refused. So I got their breakfast ready and put her on the perch next to my male to eat and she walked away to another perch. Now she's back on the bottom sleeping. I DID see her go to the water bowl and drink first.

This is weird because she's usually the hungrier of the two in the morning and perches right on the door so I see her to feed her. I was up around 2 in the morning with my daughter and I know I woke them, but it was only for a few minutes. My boy Jack is his usual self.

Anything I can do/look for short of calling the vet? I'm planning on it if she doesn't come around soon. I'm feeling extra guarded as we put our cat to sleep on Thursday and then one of our rats died on Saturday.

Thank you for reading!!

Please, don't hesitate and contact an Avian vet immediately. Birds are excellent at hiding illnesses, and oftentimes by the time we (the guardians) notice obvious symptoms of being unwell, it 'can' be too late.

Do you know of a good / reputable avian vet in your area?

A female eclectus should never be on the floor of her cage unless she is playing. Please get her to the vet asap! Lethargy, lack of appetite and being on the floor of the cage are all major signs for alarm.

We're back from the vet. She took blood and urine and we have to wait on the blood work. She said the urine showed distressed kidneys. She wants me to take her to the university instead of waiting on the blood.

I have her home and I stuck water in front of her and she drank from it. She's sleeping again. I'm worried.

I would be very concerned as well to be only 6 months old and having kidney distress.:(
Has she been exposed to any heavy metals? I would urge you to take her to the University as the vet suggested this is not something you want to wait and see on.

Please do take her to the university to have her checked out. Are you feeding frozen or fresh veggies?

Yes I would love to take her but I can't. It's hours away and I have no child care. I've been sitting in the room with her monitoring to make sure she's not getting any worse. The vet will help in any way she can if it comes to that. She's woken up to drink more water and I see that as a good sign that she's at least not deteriorating. Believe me I want to do anything I can for her. It's really hard feeling so helpless.

Mostly fresh. My boy Jack is in the exact same environment eating the same things and he couldn't be more active today. He's even been checking on Raja.

Couldn't you take your child (children) with you? This sounds pretty critical to me.

Obviously they're transportable, yes. But I won't do that to them or my bird.

The reason why I asked is awhile back they found the frozen veggies contains some metal particals. We only feed fresh here.

It does sound quite critical to me as well so it might be a wise decision to bring the kids along like Wendy says.

Pretty sure the metal particles are a fluke rather than some constant problem. Frozen veggies that are safe for people are fine for birds too...

It was on the news that's all I know but they said it was minimal that it doesn't really hurt us. But birds on the other hand is a different story.

A lot of times it would be safe for humans to consume but it doesn't mean it's safe for animals to!!!! Since some food are toxic to animals but not us.

Well we wouldn't feed our birds toxic veggies. That seems obvious... :) all i was commenting on was that frozen is okay. That's what Pumpkin eats. I researched it and at they are flash frozen at the hight of ripeness. So the nutrients have not had the time in shipment to break down. And blah blah science stuff about veggies. Lol

She probably sick or just down right tired but I recommend to take her to the vet to make sure

We have been feeding our birds frozen vegetables for a while. Does this mean we shouldn't do that anymore? I thought they were safe.

I never heard of someone feeding frozen veggie to there bird that might be the cause or probably too mush

Loads of people feed frozen vegetables to their birds.

There's nothing wrong with frozen veggies but everyone should do their own research and decide for themselves what they think is best.
