Hi I'm Patty and I have a 2 1/2 year old Yellow Nape Amazon named Jordan. I just noticed today that some of his feather around his neck are black on the tips. I was told by one person that it's due to molting and another said it's his diet. He on fruit and veggie pellets and gets fruit and veggies. I do add a mixture of seeds and stuff also. I've been working way more than usual the last couple months and thought maybe it was stress. I have also noticed he just wants to eat the seeds so I'm doing away with that. I will attach a picture. Hope someone can help me.

Not an amazon expert (they will probably tune in a bit later) but I've read that amazons feathers change anyway over the years- they have their definitive full adult plumage really, really late (around 10-15 years or so?)

Once a feather is formed it will not 'all of a sudden' change colour (it's dead material at the point, and maybe wear and tear can influence its appearance it a bit).
The new forming feather can tell things about (lousy) diet, stress (the infamous stress-bars / which your parrot does not have as far as I can tell) even a bit about the environment.

I think your smashing looking bird is just 'changing a bit' - but as I said: no expert.
(Good on you for limiting the seed when you noticed he was only wanting that type of food!)

Thank you for replying back! I hope that's what it is, I'm going to get him into a vet soon to have his nails done and have a checkup done on him. I'm just trying to make sure that it's nothing urgent. Hes my baby and I just worry about him. Hes never in his cage but I'm sure hes been a bit lonely the last couple months but that will change soon. Thank you again!! :)

Christa gave you some good advice.
Here's a link for capable vets, if you need it.

Regular vets often "wing it" with birds, although some are very caring.
As for diet... my usual two cents...
Harrison's Bird Foods
I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff, like fruits and vegetables! My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day. I also like Harrison's via mail because I never have to worry about out-of-date products.
Good for you, for caring, and reaching out!

Thank you so very much! I will give Harrison's a try, hes been on zupreem since I've had him and I tried roudybush but he didn't like that at all. I've been putting a seed mixture in his food also but noticed lately that's all hes wanted to eat so I'm cutting that out for a while. Thank you again and thank you for the information!! Its much appreciated from all of ya'll!
