I need some suggestions/help with my WF zon Flash. We got her in Dec from a breeder. She's only 7 months old. She screams for attention, screams when you leave the room, screams when someone comes over. The family is very frustrated!! I have her cage in the family room. She gets 10-12hrs of sleep a night, I cover the cage. I take her out as often as possible, but she will shake often likes she's scared or yawn when it seems like she's over stimulated. She loves to play and chew, she has TONS of toys. She has a tree she plays on out of cage. She gets Harrison's pellets with fresh veggies and fruits. She does well with me, tolerates my son (3) but doesn't like the boyfriend a whole lot. It's been a mess. She didn't step up at first, taught her that but its taken until just last month to get that. Is she unhappy??? Bored?? Was it bad socialization as a baby?!?? HELP!!!!!!!!

Ive tried ignoring and walking away when she screams, it works sometimes. but hard to do this when the 3 year old won't play along. My newest idea is to play hide and seek when she starts screaming, and when she's quiet we can go back where she is. I'm desperate :(. Should I move her cagee to a seperate room and just put her on tree in living area when we are home? I don't really want to isolate her.....

Check out & read up on clicker training.....there are a bunch of training videos on you-tube.....there's also some by a guy named Dave Womach.....watch his videos, listen to his free stuff, but I'd never buy from him, though you'll have to make your own decision on that.....I will say this, if you don't make the time & get started training him, your family's going to get more than frustrated.....

Good luck.....

I just started clicker training this weekend, let's hope this helps then!

Foraging, Pollyvision, foraging, exercise, bathing, trick training, foraging...

A lot of people will recommend to just "ignore" the behavior, but it doesn't teach the parrot *what* behavior to do instead of screaming. I often don't recommend that kind of training because it is often used incorrectly, and no one should have to listen to a parrot screaming their head off if you can find other, easier ways to keep them happy and quiet. Here's a "few" links that may be of help. When you read them, just keep in mind about the ignoring part, and try to figure out other ways to solve the behavior before going that route.

I should explain about the ignoring part... if you ignore the parrot until he/she quiets down, then go in and reward the bird, you could inadvertently be teaching the bird to scream. Rather than thinking with the idea that if the parrot is quiet the human will return, think of it with the idea that if "I've" screamed for so long and I quit, the human shows up. If the human doesn't show up immediately, maybe I need to scream for longer until the human arrives? And boom... you have a screaming parrot.

So... try and pay attention to your bird and hopefully learn how to stop the behavior before it starts. If it does start, try to find an alternative behavior that you can get the bird to do instead. If you know of peak times when the bird is going to do bad behavior, you can try nipping it in the bud by giving the bird a nice soaking bath or exercising them so that they are too busy/tired out to do the 'bad behavior' when it's "that time" to.

KalJ, your baby "may" just be going through a phase, MANY Amazons do. Unfortunately White Fronts tend to have a pretty high pitched yelp, so I feel your pain there.

I won't tell you to ignore Flash, as that will help NOBODY, especially Flash. Flash is looking for guidance. He's screeching for a reason.

Try switching toys more often, relocate the cage for a while, foraging toys, add simple shredding things, give him a task, something to do, change HIS routine. :)

Good luck!

Awesome suggestions, thanks guys! How often do you typically switch out toys? How many do you tend to have in the cage at once. Going to increase foraging I think first, along with in rease clicker training and see how that goes??

And yes, it is EXTREMELY high pitched :'(.

That always depends on how quickly my flock loses interest in particular toys. Sometimes a toy is such a big hit, that I can leave it in the cage for a week or two. Othertimes, they only like a particular toy for a day or two.

My Macs have 3 toys in their cages (each) and my Amazons have 4-5 at all times, and ALL of them have foraging toys as well. :)

Do you make your own or buy? I've been using my safe bird store a lot. Would love to hear of some fav toys that may be good for foraging. Flash is a big time chewed and loves the wooden blocks

Ever since I brought Ripley (my GW) home 3 months ago, I make ALL my own toys, as he must have been a beaver in his previous life. :54: It's amazing how quickly he can go through a 2X4, and I'm not exxaggerating either.

Here are some links to some toys I've made. Mind you, they are mostly Macaw size, but making Amazon toys is 100 times easier. :)

Those are awesome links. Can I pay you to make my toys ;) wow!!!!

I make a lot of my own toys, we have m2 that could really bankrupt you from the amount of wood he chews in a week so why buy colored nice toys when they are gone in 24 hours. He is content with a lot of what we make with wood and cardboard. I make 80 percent of my Toys I'd say. I do buy a lot like boings and some other things, but I make most toys and perches for my guys:) Wendys links are great if you are looking for cheap parts, mother pluckin bird toys makes great toy parts cheap.
